🚨 New research is changing what we know about va**ng.
A major study out of UNSW Sydney has found that e-cigarettes are likely to cause both lung AND oral cancer, making this the most definitive link to date.
Here’s what the science shows:
🔬 Va**ng aerosols contain volatile organic chemicals & metals that cause DNA damage and tissue inflammation
🐭 Animal studies showed cellular damage linked to cancer development
⚠️ Va**ng has only existed ~20 years, so long term data is still catching up
Know the signs of oral cancer:
• Jaw or ear pain
• Unexplained lumps in the head/neck
• Persistent soreness lasting 2+ weeks
• Difficulty swallowing
• Hoarseness or voice changes
If something doesn’t feel right, see your dental professional or an ENT specialist. Early detection saves lives.
Va**ng was never a “safe” alternative. The evidence is now pointing clearly in one direction. 👇 Share this with someone who needs to see it.

🧬 Oral Cancer Awareness: It starts with prevention

Most people think oral cancer screening is just about looking, but it’s also about what’s happening at the cellular level.

⚠️ Oxidative stress plays a major role in tissue damage and cancer development.
🛡️ Antioxidants help neutralize that damage.

• 🍵 Polyphenols – found in green tea, help slow abnormal cell growth
• 🥑 Vitamin E – supports mucosal integrity and tissue healing
• 🥕 Carotenoids – support epithelial health and may reduce risk of lesions

👉 As dental professionals, we don’t just clean teeth. We educate, prevent, and protect.

💡 Simple changes like nutrition, routine screenings, and proper oral care can make a real difference.

🦷 Dry mouth is more than just uncomfortable… it’s a warning sign.

Most people think it’s normal, especially with age, medications, or stress.
👉 But it’s not.

Saliva plays a critical role in protecting your mouth and your overall health. When it decreases, we often see:

• Increased cavities
• Gum inflammation and periodontal issues
• Difficulty swallowing or speaking
• Higher risk of infections
• Links to systemic conditions like diabetes and heart disease

💡 This is why dentistry is evolving.
We’re no longer just cleaning teeth. We’re identifying early dysfunction, inflammation, and risk before damage happens.

We focus on prevention and early detection. Especially for patients who have difficulty accessing traditional dental care.

Menopause & Oral Health: What Every Woman Should Know

Menopause is not just about hot flashes and mood changes.
The hormonal shifts (declining estrogen and progesterone) can significantly impact oral and sleep health — and it’s often overlooked.

Here’s what we see clinically:

• Increased risk of periodontal disease — even with good hygiene
• Dry mouth (xerostomia) → higher cavity risk
• Burning mouth symptoms
• Changes in taste
• Increased inflammation and bone density changes
• Higher incidence of bruxism and TMD
• Greater risk of sleep apnea and sleep disturbances

What’s especially concerning is that women often present differently than men with sleep apnea — reporting insomnia, fatigue, headaches, or mood changes rather than loud snoring. This leads to underdiagnosis.

As dental professionals, we are in a unique position to recognize these patterns early.

If you are in your mid-40s or beyond and noticing:
• More gum sensitivity
• Increased plaque or inflammation
• Dry mouth
• Jaw tension
• Poor sleep

It may not be “just stress.” Hormonal changes could be playing a role.

Preventive care, early screening, and open conversations matter.

If you have questions about how menopause may be affecting your oral or sleep health, I’m here to help.

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in the European Journal of Neurology found that patients with periodontitis (advanced gum disease) may have an 80% higher risk of migraines compared to those with healthy gums.

Why might this happen?

Gum disease increases systemic inflammatory markers such as:
• Interleukin-6 (IL-6)
• Procalcitonin
• Pentraxin 3
• Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)

Chronic inflammation can influence the vascular system and nerve pathways — both key components in migraine development.

Important notes:
✔ This shows an association, not direct causation.
✔ Stress, alcohol, and other migraine triggers were not fully examined.
✔ More research is needed.

But the takeaway is powerful:

Oral health is deeply connected to overall health.

If you experience frequent migraines:
• Make sure your gums are evaluated
• Stay consistent with professional cleanings
• Address periodontal inflammation early

Prevention isn’t cosmetic. It’s medical.

If you or a loved one need preventive dental care — especially homebound or senior patients — feel free to message me.

Researchers believe the connection may be related to chronic inflammation.
Gum disease isn’t just local — inflammation in the mouth can contribute to systemic inflammatory burden over time.

This doesn’t mean a cavity causes heart disease.

But it reinforces something important:

✔️ Prevention in childhood matters
✔️ Controlling inflammation matters
✔️ Early oral habits matter

Teaching children proper brushing, flossing, and creating positive dental experiences isn’t just about preventing cavities — it may support their long-term overall health.

As a preventive provider, this is why I emphasize early care and consistency.

Protect the smile. Protect the future.
