The term "Special Care Patient" is used in the oral health field to describe an individual with special needs, including physical, medical, developmental and/or cognitive conditions, resulting in limitations in their ability to receive dental services and prevent oral diseases by maintaining daily oral hygiene. http://www.scdaonline.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1

Special Care Dentistry serves patient

s who have:

learning or emotional disabilities;
mood disorders;
medical, physical, or psychiatric issues that prevent mobility;
mild to severe phobias; or
been immobilized due to age-related infirmity. Because their individual situations may present obstacles to dental care, often times special needs patients may have infrequent dental appointments (only once every few years, or maybe never), which can lead to more acute complications. Special Care Dentistry requires the ability to provide sophisticated services such as:

home care which we offer through Dentistry to Your Door
hospital affiliation; and
a complete array of sleep or sedation options.
