IT'S HALLOWEEN TIME! Smart choices for your child's teeth.

It's possible your little ones won't be trick-or-treating this year, but the sweet treats will probably still be around. Taking a few extra steps can help keep the cavity bugs away:

- Steer clear of sticky candy like caramels and gummies. They hang around in the mouth longer.
- Instead, think about cookies or chocolates. They leave the mouth faster, causing less damage.
- Allow your child to enjoy treats on Halloween night, then consider donating the remaining candy. Small amounts of candy spread out over multiple days or weeks will increase the cavity risk.
- Finally, brush your child's teeth thoroughly before bed.

THE FIRST DENTAL VISIT should be when the first baby teeth come in. Yes – that early! Your child doesn’t have to be old enough to cooperate and sit in the chair. The pediatric dentist will make you and your little one comfortable as we get a quick look in the mouth to make sure everything is developing properly. This is also a great time to discuss ways to prevent cavities, home care techniques, when to eliminate the pacifier, etc. Don’t wait until a cavity develops to find a dentist. Establish your child’s dental home today!

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF WATER FLUORIDATION! It was 1945 when the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan added fluoride (a naturally occurring mineral in rocks and soil) to the city’s drinking water. Five years later the local schoolchildren were found to have significantly fewer cavities, and one of the most significant public health achievements led to a nationwide reduction in the prevalence of dental decay. Fluoride works by strengthening enamel that has been weakened many of the foods we eat. The weakened tooth enamel takes in the fluoride and makes teeth more resistant to cavities. Have a glass of water and protect your teeth!

STAYING AT HOME = MORE SNACKING = MORE CAVITIES. As kids return for their routine check-ups and cleanings, we are seeing a lot more cavities. Kids are snacking frequently throughout the day (grazing). While choosing a healthy snack is important (avoid sticky, starchy and sugary items), non-stop nibbling increases the risk for tooth decay. Schedule snack time and stick to the routine!

Routine appointments can now be scheduled for kids. Don't delay in calling us for a check-up and cleaning. Those twice-a-year visits are super important. We can identify cavities in the early stages and possibly prevent bigger problems later!

The waiting room may be a little empty (only one patient at a time) and smell like disinfectant, but we are back to scheduling routine appointments! Just don’t be alarmed when we take your temperature as you come in…we are following all the recommended safety guidelines.

WE ARE STILL HERE FOR EMERGENCIES. We frequently disinfect all treatment areas (as we normally would do), but we also made a few changes: Everyone is wearing a mask during the appointment process – from checking in to checking out. Families will be scheduled so there is no overlap in the waiting room. If you call and we are not there, leave a message or contact Dr. Sosa via the emergency number.

While we are staying open to meet the needs of our little patients with toothaches, we are making sure to sanitize regularly. We also are adjusting our appointments so no two families will have to share the waiting room.

During Shutdown: WHEN SHOULD YOU BRING YOUR
CHILD TO THE DENTIST?
Most dental offices will remain available to their patients for dental emergencies. Some common reasons your child should not wait to see their pediatric dentist might include (but not limited to):

Dental Pain – Continuous or intermittent, lasting for more than
a day
Injury to the Mouth and/or Broken Tooth – Should be
evaluated immediately
Dental Abscess – Sometimes there is no pain, but swelling
around the tooth is evident.

Other conditions may also constitute a reason not to delay a visit to the dentist. If you’re not sure, call our office to speak with the dentist.
