There are many situations that can arise during which our dental team will suggest a dental crown.
- Root canal. If a patient has had a root canal, the tooth that was treated is no longer alive due to the removal of the blood supply and nerves. This can cause the tooth to become weak and brittle. Placing a dental crown over this tooth will protect the remaining structure and allow the patient to maintain the natural tooth in place, eliminating the need for dental restorations.
- Extensive decay. Large areas of decay are often addressed with dental fillings, but this can significantly impact the tooth’s structure. The placement of a dental crown over a tooth with a large filling is an intelligent decision to protect the tooth underneath from breakage.
- Flawed tooth. Cosmetically flawed teeth may be covered with a dental crown. This is also an alternative to a porcelain veneer or composite resin bonding.
- Damaged tooth/injury. A tooth that has had an injury, such as trauma that caused chipping or breakage, may be able to be repaired with bonding. However, more significant damage may be repaired with the placement of a dental crown over the top for extra protection.
