Fly all the way from San Diego for six days?
Absolutely worth it. ✈️

Old friends, familiar places, new things to learn… and the chance to share this part of my world with Sebastian.

Then came the trains, planes and automobiles. Sebastian headed back to dental school at RSU, and I headed home with fresh inspiration and so much gratitude.

Thank you to everyone who made this reunion happen—and everyone who made those six days so memorable.

A little to an unexpected encounter—and a photo I’m so glad I kept.

The book in my hands? What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith. That title alone gives you something to think about. There’s always more to learn, wherever you are in life.

I went back to Würzburg for the familiar faces… and came home with a few “wait, that happened HERE?” facts. 👀

At my university, Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895. A discovery that changed medicine—and the way we see inside a tooth.

Then there’s the city itself: hometown of Dirk Nowitzki and Maxi Kleber, and a filming location for The Three Musketeers. Science, basketball, a little movie magic. Quite the résumé. 😉

And something especially close to my world: Fraunhofer ISC in Würzburg helped develop glass-ceramics used in modern dental restorations, working alongside industry partners.

Coming back reminds me how much my roots still inspire the work I do in California.

Returning to Würzburg meant familiar faces, plenty of catching up, and an update on materials science and biomaterials research. Back at my university, still curious about what comes next.

Learning about the Bene-Maxilla-Stiftung’s humanitarian work was another meaningful reminder of why we chose this profession. Behind the research and the dentistry, there are people.

A special thank-you to our main organizers, Dr. Sabine Kämpf, Dr. Valerie Bode, and Dr. André Trojanski. Bringing everyone together takes so much work—and I’m grateful you did.

So lovely reconnecting with Dr. Sabine Kämpf and Dr. Eulert from Bayreuth; Dr. Valerie Bode from northern Germany; Dr. Tobias Teuscher; Dr. Klaus Lierheimer; Dr. André Trojanski; Dr. Andrea Behr from Würzburg; Dr. Johan Molund and Dr. Martin Segerström from Sweden; and Dr. Gernot Keller.

And a special mention for my fellow colleague Dr. Andrea Behr, who brings a dentist’s perspective to the Bavarian State Parliament and advocates for fairness in dental care.
My roots continue to guide me, all the way to California.

An old friend from 1982 happened to have an old photo of me saved. What are the chances?!

That unexpected throwback led to these memories: dental school days, familiar faces, and hairstyles that deserve their own post. And apparently, my California adventures have provided plenty to talk about. 😉🌴

From Würzburg to California, my roots continue to inspire me. So grateful for the friendships and memories along the way.

Back in Würzburg, where my dental journey began. And back with the people who were part of it.

Returning to the School of Dentistry at Julius-Maximilians University brought back so much. We toured the dental hospital and were reminded of the spirit of innovation that impressed us then—and continues to inspire us today.

Then came the catching up. The photos. The balloons that refused to cooperate. 😂
