A patient sent me an article claiming brushing twice a day shortens your lifespan because it “kills good bacteria.”
That’s not how this works.
Brushing is mechanical—it removes plaque biofilm, it does not sterilize your mouth. The oral microbiome repopulates quickly. The goal is balance, not eradication.
Some mouthwashes, however—especially when used chronically—can disrupt that balance. Modern oral care focuses on timing, gentle antimicrobials, and respecting biology.
Fear-based headlines get clicks. Science deserves context.
