Prior to becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, one must first complete dental school and receive a doctorate degree in dentistry (D.D.S.). An oral and maxillofacial surgeon must then complete either a four-year or six-year accredited residency program to become a certified specialist. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon who completes a six-year program will have received a medical degree by completing medical school, and will have completed a one-year medical internship (usually in general surgery). The scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery practice includes the diagnosis and medical or surgical management of diseases, injuries, and structural abnormalities of the jaws and related facial structures.
