It's Women's History Month and here's a nod to women dentists who broke barriers for dentists like me! Even though women such as Emeline Roberts Jones were practising dentistry unofficially, structured education and licensing was not available until the mid-19th century. Lucy Beaman Hobbs Taylor was the first woman to earn a dental degree in 1866. While the curriculum at that time was only 2 years, she had enough practical experience to complete her degree in just one. The first Black woman to graduate as a dentist was Ida Gray Nelson Rollins, who graduated in 1890, who then became the first Black dentist to practice in Chicago. Many women at the time faced opposition to being admitted to dental schools or to practising dentistry as a profession. Still, they prevailed and today, more women are graduating dental schools than ever before. They hold positions of leadership in our dental institutions, professional organizations, armed forces, public health and research spaces, and have no limits on how they can continuously improve the oral health of the communities they serve. - Dr. Barakat

Dentists like Dr. Barakat, need an excellent extra pair of hands to be able to do their work every day. So here's a shout out to Carrie for being an integral part of every patient's care at our practice!
