Did you know that Oktoberfest is traditionally celebrated in September?

While the event itself is a harvest festival named for our tenth month, it has a finite end date that is specified as the first Sunday in October.

Additionally, many years ago the savvy German promoters of Oktoberfest decided to take advantage of the warmer days in September the event to be longer and longer, thus causing an ever earlier start date and solving the riddle of why Oktoberfest mostly occurs in September.

Here at Cal Select Dental Group, we are celebrating Oktoberfest with a Goodie Basket GIVEAWAY!

When was the last time you visited the dentist? If it's been 6 months or even over a year, there's a high probability you need to have your teeth deep cleaned. An evaluation by your dentist will determine whether or not you need a regular cleaning or a deep cleaning. While many believe the two are the same, there is a big difference between the two procedures.

A deep cleaning is needed when there is a larger amount of bacteria and tartar buildup. When “pockets” form due to gum disease, the bacteria and tarter fill these pockets. When it’s not removed, it opens the door to a number of oral health complications, such as periodontal disease and eventual tooth loss. This treatment can take more than one appointment for the cleaning to be performed due to the extensiveness of the cleaning needed.

For those who have periodontal disease, a deep cleaning can actually help reverse the progression of the disease. In fact, many see results within 3 months of having their teeth deep cleaned.

When you visit your dentist for routine cleanings, we can detect tooth decay early, which can save you time, money, and your teeth! A regular cleaning is performed when you visit your dentist twice a year and maintains the general cleanliness of your teeth. The main goal of regular dental cleanings is to eliminate plaque and calculus that build up under the gum line.

Regardless of how great your at-home oral hygiene routine is, your teeth will still collect plaque and tartar over time. This is precisely why routine cleanings every six months are important.

Spring is finally here and what better time of the year to treat yourself to a dental cleaning. Spring cleaning isn’t only for your home, it's also a great time to see a dentist and have a clean slate for your teeth too. Kick off the spring season and get your teeth cleaned!

What can I expect during a dental cleaning?

- Before the actual cleaning process begins, we will begin with a physical exam of your entire mouth, checking for signs of gingivitis or other potential concerns.
- Our skilled dental hygienist will remove all the hard buildup of tartar and plaque on your teeth.
- After your teeth are completely tartar-free, the hygienist brushes them with a high-powered electric brush.
- You will receive a professional flossing session that will remove any leftover plaque or toothpaste prior cleaning process.

What are the benefits of a dental cleaning?

- Healthier teeth and gums
- Fresher breath
- Reduced risk of severe dental problems

How can I spruce up my dental routine?
- Update your toothbrush. You should replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months or when your bristles become frayed.
- Step up your toothbrush game with an electric toothbrush. Ask your dentist which toothbrush they recommend for you.
- Clean your toothbrush holder. We sometimes forget that the container is exposed to the same bacteria as the rest of our bathroom surfaces. Wash it with warm, soapy water, and wipe it down with disinfectant.
