Infection Control

Infection control procedures are actions taken in health care settings to prevent the spread of disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommendations for dental office infection control. Dr. Goring cares about your safety and works hard to prevent the spread of infection.

Before you enter the examining room, all surfaces, such as the dental chair, dental light, drawer handles and countertops, have been cleaned and disinfected. Offices may cover some equipment with protective covers, which are replaced after each patient.

Non-disposable items like the dental tools are cleaned and sterilized between patients. Disposable dental tools and needles are never reused. Infection control precautions also require all dental staff involved in patient care to use appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, masks, gowns and eyewear when needed. After each patient, disposable gloves and masks are thrown away. Before seeing the next patient, everyone on the treatment team washes their hands and put on a new pair of gloves.

Your well-being is important to Dr. Goring and his staff. That’s why infection control procedures are in place at your dental office.

What about the new coronavirus?
With so many news stories, it’s understandable to be concerned about the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Please know that the precautions Dr. Goring already takes every day to prevent the spread of infection in his practice also helps prevent the spread of COVID-19.

If you are ill with flu-like symptoms, you should reschedule your appointment.

If you or someone you are in close contact with have recently traveled to one of the countries with large outbreaks of COVID-19 (China, Italy, Iran, South Korea) or if you have been exposed to someone else who was diagnosed with COVID-19 or who was quarantined as a precaution, wait 14 days until you see your dentist to make sure you have not caught the coronavirus.

If you are healthy, there’s no need to cancel your regularly scheduled dental appointment.

It’s important to know that the majority of people infected with the coronavirus experience flu-like symptoms and then recover. Most people do not develop serious respiratory complications.

Those most at risk of becoming seriously ill are elderly people and those with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease, among others. Children, thus far, have been largely unaffected.

Here are a few things you can do on your own to help keep yourself and those around you healthy:
• Wash your hands frequently, or use a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent ethyl alcohol.
• Avoid touching your face, eyes or nose to reduce the spread of germs.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow. Infections like the coronavirus spread through the tiny droplets in coughs and sneezes.
• Stay home if you feel sick. If you have flu-like symptoms or otherwise feel unwell, stay home and rest. Call your dentist to reschedule your appointment for a later date. This will reduce the risk of spreading your illness.

Visit the CDC’s website for the latest information on COVID-19.

With the advent of dental implants some people may question if bridges are still a relevant treatment option. While dental implants are often a great option, there are still many benefits to dental bridges:

- They restore your smile and chewing ability
- Often cheaper than dental implants
- In some cases they are more aesthetic than a dental implant
- Faster than a dental implant
- Provide a fixed and long lasting replacement for missing teeth

You can learn more about the benefits of dental bridges and the process for getting a bridge on our services page https://saltlakeprosthodontics.com/services/bridges/.

Dental implants are becoming an increasingly popular treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Over the years more dental providers have started placing implants and more manufactures have started producing implants leading to a spectrum of quality and pricing for treatment. Learn the questions you need to ask regarding dental implants before moving forward with treatment in the article "Are All Dental Implants Created Equal?"

Are All Dental Implants Created Equal? People often ask me about dental implants and specifically why some dentists advertise them for much cheaper than others. You may see a billboard or flyer advertising the surgical placement of an implant and a crown for the implant at $2,500, $2,000, or even as...

As a prosthodontist, I often receive products such as toothbrushes and toothpastes to sample. Everyone has their personal preferences when it comes to different toothbrushes, but if you have sensitive teeth I recommend trying Oral B's Sensi-Soft toothbrush. I should probably include here that I am not being paid by Oral B to promote their toothbrush, but rather I am hoping to help those with sensitive teeth. My wife has sensitive teeth and often experiences sensitivity when brushing. Since switching to Oral B's Sensi-Soft toothbrush, she no longer experiences pain while brushing.

A new report concludes that without fluoride, toothbrushing and other oral care efforts have "no impact" on cavity prevention.

While implants aren’t cheap they are often the best option when replacing a missing tooth or teeth. As a Prosthodontist I use the highest quality implants from reputable companies that stand behind their products. When considering dental implants, make sure to work with the specialists and invest in a treatment that will be both long lasting and aesthetic.

Dental implants are increasingly being used to replace missing or failing teeth instead of dentures or bridges, which can be uncomfortable and hasten further deterioration. But implants can be very expensive and rarely are covered by insurance.
