Here's something most people don't realize: a big part of my job is arresting bacteria.

When you have periodontitis, which is advanced gum disease, bacteria are actively doing damage below the gumline. My job is to stop them. To arrest the disease before it takes anything else from you.

By the time we catch it, some damage is usually done. I won't pretend otherwise. But here's the part that matters most: we can preserve the bone you still have, and we can get you stable. A lot of people live with periodontitis for the rest of their lives and keep their teeth.

So yes, it's something to take seriously. But it is not a sentence to lose your smile.

If you're pregnant and someone told you to skip the dentist until after the baby comes, that advice is mostly wrong.

First of all. dental x-rays are safe during pregnancy, and the American Academy of OBGYNs is clear on it.

And even more important, an active dental infection during pregnancy is the kind of thing that stresses the body. There's also research linking untreated gum disease to low birth weight.

So no, skipping the dentist while you're pregnant isn't the safer call. What we put off during pregnancy is the non-urgent stuff, like whitening or non-essential cosmetic work. What we don't put off is your regular cleaning, your check-ups, and anything that's actively hurting.

There's also a thing called pregnancy gingivitis, where your gums get more reactive because the bacteria in your mouth behave differently with all the hormone changes. It's real, it's normal, and we'll show you exactly what to do about it.

A cavity we could have caught and treated a year ago can turn into an expensive root canal if it's ignored.

When we catch a cavity early enough on x-ray, before it's really broken through the enamel, we can sometimes treat it with a remineralization product, basically a paste that helps the tooth pull the lost minerals back in, without any need for drilling or numbing. It's simple and inexpensive.

If a few months go by and the cavity isn't treated, it gets bigger. At that point it needs an actual filling.

And if you wait long enough that the cavity reaches the nerve, then you'll need a root canal. Plus a crown, because by then the tooth needs the structural support and probably can't carry on its own anymore.

Cavities really don't develop overnight, and I'm not going to lecture you about coming in sooner. I'm just laying out what the same problem at different stages actually costs, because that math is rarely written down for patients to see.

"Didn't I just have x-rays?"

I hear this question almost every day, and I want you to know something. I always check.

Before I ever walk into the room and tell you we're due for x-rays, I've already looked at your chart. I'm human, so once in a while I might slip, but the vast majority of the time I can tell you exactly when your last set was taken.

If I'm bringing it up, it's because it's actually time. And I promise, this isn't about adding anything extra to your visit. It's about taking care of you the right way.

Here's the honest truth. When we look in your mouth, we can only see the outside of your teeth. X-rays let us see what's happening underneath, between teeth, and below the gum line. Without updated images, we're essentially going in blind, and that's not the standard of care any of our patients deserve.

The moment you walk in, you'll notice our office doesn't feel like a typical dental practice.

That's intentional.

Soft lighting instead of harsh fluorescents. Candles at the front desk. Calming music in the background. Weighted blankets at every chair. Netflix queued up so you can watch British Bake Off while we work.

A patient asked me a question last week and I didn't know the answer with full confidence. So I looked it up.

I told her, "My gut says this, but the research keeps moving and I really don't want to give you old information. Let me check."

It took maybe thirty seconds. The answer matched what my gut had said. But now I actually knew, and so did she.

Once upon a time, we thought sugar caused cavities, and now we know it's the bacteria eating the sugar, combined with the frequency of acid exposure, the saliva flow, all of it working together. The science keeps moving. I refuse to be the dentist left behind because I was too proud to look something up.

So no, I'm not going to pretend I'm 100% sure of something I'm not. I'd rather say "let me verify that" and follow up later with the right answer. If I find out something different from what I told you in the chair, you'll get an email or a phone call from me directly. Every time.
