When you lose a tooth and don’t replace it, a lot more happens than you might think. Over time, the teeth next to the gap start to shift, and the one opposite can grow longer trying to “meet” something that’s no longer there. That throws your bite off and can lead to long-term alignment issues.
Meanwhile, the jawbone under the missing tooth starts to shrink because it’s not getting the usual stimulation from chewing. This bone loss can change the shape of your face, reduce lip support, and make future dental work a bit trickier.
As your teeth move around, small gaps can form and trap food and bacteria. These changes often happen slowly, so most people don’t notice until real damage has set in.
Replacing a missing tooth early isn’t just about looks, it’s about protecting your bite, your bone, and your overall oral health. Today’s dentistry makes it easier than ever, with great options like implants, bridges, and dentures that look and feel natural.
