Does your mouth ever feel dry, sticky, or like you need water constantly?

It might be more than just thirst — it could be dry mouth, and it’s something we take seriously at Sarah A. Smith DDS.

Saliva plays a big role in protecting your smile. It helps wash away food particles, neutralize acids, and fight cavity-causing bacteria. When your mouth remains dry for extended periods, your risk of cavities, bad breath, gum disease, and enamel damage can increase. Save this post to remember these tips, and ask our team for more info if you have concerns about dry mouth.

Ever wonder what the ridges on the back of your toothbrush are for? They’re for cleaning your tongue! 👅✨

Your tongue can harbor bacteria just like your teeth do, and skipping it can lead to bad breath and extra plaque buildup. Those little ridges (or a tongue scraper) help gently remove bacteria and freshen your breath in seconds.

What's a dentist's favorite movie? We'll give you a hint…

Let's NOT send your plaque to the future. Because trust us: plaque doesn’t age well. It hardens, turns into tartar, and can lead to cavities and gum issues faster than you can say “1.21 gigawatts.”

Remember: brushing and flossing daily, along with regular visits to Sarah A. Smith DDS, can keep your smile healthy now and in the future.

Can cavities be contagious? While you can't “catch” a cavity, the bacteria that cause cavities can pass from one person to another through everyday moments like sharing a spoon, sipping from the same cup, or even a kiss on the lips. In fact, many babies are first exposed to these bacteria from their parents or older siblings long before their first tooth ever appears. This doesn't mean you need to stop showing your little one affection. It simply means that taking care of your own oral health matters more than most people realize. When the whole family brushes, flosses, and stays on top of dental visits, everyone benefits, especially the tiniest members of the household.

Did you know baby teeth don’t just fall out? They’re actually gently pushed out by the adult teeth coming in behind them.

As permanent teeth begin to grow, they dissolve the roots of baby teeth, making them loose and ready to wiggle free. It’s all part of a natural process that helps guide adult teeth into their proper positions.
