Most tooth aches involve irritation or infection of the nerve space in the center of the tooth, also known as the pulp. When this happens, one of the best ways to make sure the tooth remains viable and healthy is to perform a root canal. This involves the cleaning out and sealing of the pulp space, thus preventing further growth of the infectious bacteria. Root canals have a bad reputation but often they result in reduction of pain and allow the tooth to return to normal function.
