Sharing a clinical case of a 9 year old patient with scoliosis secondary to a syrinx, treated with PSSE and a custom made WCR brace designed by Raul Ferrera, Director of WCR Brace Design and Development, for Perth Scoliosis Clinic.
Non idiopathic scoliosis requires a specific clinical approach, as curve behaviour is influenced by the underlying neurological condition.
With the WCR brace, we apply a three dimensional correction strategy based on biomechanical principles to influence alignment in the coronal, sagittal and transverse planes. The goal is to achieve structural correction while optimising overall 3D balance and supporting growth modulation.
Each WCR brace is individually crafted for the patient’s specific curve pattern, without the use of libraries or predefined molds, ensuring a truly personalised approach.
The images highlight the results achieved after only 5 months of treatment.
Amazing teamwork between the two clinics!

Some babies develop a flat spot or head shape difference simply because of circumstances that start before birth.

Things like:
• Being a twin or multiple
• Premature birth (when skull bones are softer)
• Position in the uterus during pregnancy
• Limited space toward the end of pregnancy

These factors can put gentle pressure on one part of a baby’s head while the skull is still very soft.

The important thing to remember: this is common, and it isn’t something parents cause.

If you ever have questions about your baby’s head shape, an evaluation can help determine whether everything looks typical or if some intervention is needed.

Flat spots (positional head shape changes) are more common than many parents expect.

The good news? Most are related to positioning — not something you did wrong.

Some of the most common causes include:

• Safe sleep positioning (Back to Sleep is important; it has reduced SIDS by over 50%, but it's the most frequent factor in developing flat spots)
• In-utero positioning (low in the pelvis, breech, etc.)
• Neck tightness (torticollis, often due to position prior to birth)
• Multiple gestation (twins, triplets, etc.)
• Premature birth (softer skull and often less strength/movement early on)

When pressure stays on the same area of the skull over time, flattening can develop.

The earlier we identify contributing factors, the easier it is to guide head shape and support healthy motor development.

If you have concerns about your baby’s head shape, we offer free evaluations to assess and provide personalized guidance.

You don’t have to guess — we’re here to help. 💛

It’s common for babies to have a “favorite” side — but consistent side preference can sometimes be a sign of underlying neck tightness.

When babies struggle to turn equally both directions, it can contribute to:
• Head shape changes
• Feeding challenges
• Delays in rolling and other motor skills

The good news? Early support makes a big difference.

If you’re noticing your baby prefers one side, we’d love to help. Schedule a free evaluation for personalized assessment and simple, practical advice. 💛
