Dr. Jordan Gaddis grew up in Sacramento and is a local Oak Ridge High School graduate. He completed his undergraduate degree in cell biology at the University of California, Davis and graduated from dental school at the University of Southern California. Is your child scared of going to the Dentist?

PLAY DENTIST!

Preparing your child for the dentist and addressing their fears can be as simple as playing a game of pretend. Get out their toothbrush and pretend to be the dentist. Act out what will happen at the visit, including having them sit in a chair, counting their teeth, brushing, and flossing. Then, let them play dentist. You or a stuffed animal can take on the role of the patient. Giving them an idea of what to expect and introducing them to a dental visit in an environment where they feel comfortable helps eliminate some of the unknowns.

Having trouble making oral care fun for your little ones?

Let your toddler take over!!

If your child is at an age where they want to do everything themselves, let them do the brushing first. Be sure to watch them carefully so you can touch up where they missed after they’re done brushing themselves. This helps give them some control by going first. You can also watch to see if they move the brush up and down, left and right, or in circles and mimic that pattern to make the experience more comfortable for them once you take over.

Having trouble getting your little one to commit to brushing each day?

Try making your routine musical!

Playing music while brushing your teeth adds a calming and enjoyable sensory component to this task. Music can also be used as a timer so your child knows exactly how long they need to brush for.

This is especially useful if your little one typically brushes their teeth for 10 seconds instead of 2 minutes. You can even use a musical toothbrush to make this activity more fun.

Your child can press play themselves, start brushing when the music begins and finish when the tune ends. Otherwise, sing a song to keep them brushing and make it more fun!

One of the best ways to avoid the fear of the dentist is to start bringing your child in for visits early. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children be seen six months after the eruption of their first tooth or by their first birthday. Little is done during these early visits, but they help familiarize your child with our office and us, preventing fears later on!
