Many people are surprised to learn that Maine allows independent dental hygiene practices.

An Independent Practice Dental Hygienist (IPDH) is a licensed dental hygienist who is able to provide preventive dental care without a dentist on site. This model was created to improve access to oral health services, especially in communities where dental care can be harder to access.

At an independent hygiene office in Maine, patients can receive services such as:
• Dental cleanings
• Oral health assessments
• X-rays
• Fluoride treatments
• Sealants
• Periodontal (gum disease) care
• Oral health education and prevention

If a patient needs treatment that requires a dentist—such as fillings, crowns, or extractions—we provide referrals to trusted local dental offices to ensure patients receive the care they need.

Independent hygiene practices focus on prevention, education, and maintaining healthy smiles for patients of all ages. They are fully licensed, regulated by the state of Maine, and committed to providing safe, high-quality care.

Our goal is simple: make preventive dental care more accessible, convenient, and patient-focused.
