That older silver filling wasn’t the only thing we noticed.

This tooth also showed visible fracture lines. Clenching and grinding can place repeated forces on the teeth and may contribute to cracking, but every tooth must be evaluated individually.

Fortunately, this patient addressed the area early. After examination, a tooth-colored composite restoration was appropriate for this case.

If a crack progresses toward the center or root of a tooth, treatment may become more extensive—potentially involving a crown, root canal treatment, or, in some cases, extraction.

The takeaway is not that every amalgam filling should be removed. It is that cracks, discomfort when biting, or changes around an existing filling deserve attention.

What if your headache isn’t starting in your head? 🤔

Jaw pain, clenching and headaches may feel connected—but they don’t always have the same cause. That’s why effective care begins with identifying whether the primary problem involves the jaw joint, chewing muscles, bite or another type of headache disorder.

EMFACE® is a needle-free treatment that combines synchronized radiofrequency with muscle stimulation. It is FDA-cleared for TMJ dysfunction and associated pain, relief of muscle-spasm symptoms, muscle re-education, increased local circulation and maintenance or improvement of jaw range of motion.

For selected patients with persistent muscle-related TMD pain, botulinum toxin may also be considered to reduce activity in overactive or painful chewing muscles. This application is off-label, evidence remains mixed, and it should be considered within a comprehensive treatment plan—not presented as a universal solution.

Some headaches may be associated with painful jaw muscles. Others, including migraine, require a different diagnosis and treatment approach. Botox® is FDA-approved for the prevention of chronic migraine in adults, which is distinct from its use in TMD-related muscle care.

At Carewell, we evaluate first and recommend treatment only when it fits your individual findings.
