You're welcome to bring your own headphones and put on whatever helps you tune the rest out. Your dental assistant stays chairside the entire time, not in and out of the room, and we always agree on a signal before we begin. A hand raise, a tap, whatever works.

The middle ground most people don't know about

The patients who come to me for All-on-X (upper and lower dental implants) usually aren’t longtime denture wearers. Most of them have never had dentures and didn’t plan to start.

They have teeth, bad ones, failing ones, teeth that have needed work over and over and never quite got fully fixed. They’re chewing mostly with their front teeth or only on one side because the others are gone, sensitive or broken. They’re exhausted by it.

They also don’t think of themselves as denture people. That feels like something that happens to someone older, not them. And All-on-X isn’t a denture, it’s a permanent, fixed set of teeth that you never take out.

The question I hear more than any other in my Roseville office is some version of “Is this going to hurt?”

It’s a fair question. And the honest answer is: we have several ways to make sure it doesn’t.

For a lot of patients, the TV in the room, a blanket, and their own headphones is enough to take the edge off. For others, we start with nitrous, laughing gas, which relaxes you without putting you to sleep.

If you need something stronger, oral sedation means you take a pill before you come in, have someone drive you, and spend most of the appointment in a comfortable haze you won’t fully remember.

Lastly, IV sedation is available when needed.

Most people are genuinely surprised by how manageable it all is once they understand what’s available. If anxiety has been keeping you out of the chair, let’s talk through what would work for you.

If anxiety has kept you out of the dental chair, I want to walk you through what sedation actually looks like, because most of the fear comes from not knowing.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) wears off within minutes of us removing the mask. You drive yourself home, same as any other appointment.

Oral sedation is a pill you take before you come in. Someone drives you, you spend the appointment in a comfortable haze, and most patients tell me afterward, "That's it? I don't remember anything." That's exactly the point.

We match the option to what you actually need — not more, not less. Once people understand what's available, the whole thing starts to feel a lot more manageable.

Venus told me she’d never been able to smile freely in her whole life.

She came in nervous, almost apologetic about her teeth, and said she needed to get them fixed. She’d been living with it so long it had just become part of who she was.

We did a full mouth reconstruction: crowns and veneers, top to bottom. Venus can smile now. Her confidence is different.

There’s something that stays with me when someone walks out of your office able to do something they couldn’t do before. Including just being their full self, smile and all, in a room full of people.
