Most dentists, when they place a crown, will shave the tooth down and put the cap on top of what's left.

The problem is that what's left is usually a tooth that's already been compromised — by decay, by an old filling that failed, by a crack, by years of wear. So you've got a fragile tooth supporting a permanent cap, and over time, that fragile tooth starts giving way under the crown.

Before the crown ever goes on at our office, we build the tooth back up. We use bonding material to restore the structure that's missing, so the crown is sitting on a tooth that's been re-strengthened, not just shaved down.

It adds time to the appointment. It adds a step that some practices skip. But it's also the reason the crowns we place are still doing their job five, ten, fifteen years later.
