“Toothbrush Talk”

Your mouth can be home to many different types of germs. These germs may become stored on your toothbrush. Yuck! 😝

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months and even sooner if the bristles are worn out, or if your children have been sick. 🤒
The ADA offers some helpful tips to help keep your child’s toothbrush safe to use:

1️⃣Don’t share toothbrushes!

2️⃣Rinse your child’s toothbrush after using with tap water to remove any toothpaste and debris

3️⃣Store the toothbrush in an upright position and allow it to air dry. Do not cover or store toothbrushes in a closed environment. A closed moist environment can cause germs to grow. 🦠 🧫

When in doubt, toss it out! 🗑
Nothing like a fresh clean toothbrush to keep those pretty smiles! 😁

Sugar Bugs!!! 🍭🍬

It’s a fun phrase that we use to explain to children about what can happen when there is too much sugar in your diet! Too many sugars from cakes, cookies and other starchy foods can cause decay.
Try fresh fruits for a healthy sugar alternative. 🍎🍉🍌🍓
In addition, too many sugars in drinks can also cause tooth decay! While 100% juice might sound like a healthy option for your child, it can often have too much sugar in one serving.
Always be aware of the sugar content on the FDA labels!

Some of our top sweet drink treats for our children are:

1) Flavored Waters
2) Honest Kids Juice Pouches
3) Roarin’ Waters by Capri Sun
4) Gatorade Zero/Powerade Zero
5) G2 Gatorade

Of course, our #1 choice is always water!!! You can never go wrong with plain ol’ H2O!

When talking about toothpaste, a lot of parents ask us:

1) What toothpaste should we use? We recommend any of the children’s toothpastes carrying the ADA (American Dental Association) seal. This seal means that the toothpaste contains fluoride, has the right amount of abrasiveness (not too little and not too much) and has been shown to be safe and effective.
2) How much toothpaste should we use? The AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) recommends the following: Under 3 years old: the size of a grain of rice. Between 3 and 6 years old: the size of a pea.

We can’t say it enough: fluoride helps prevent cavities!
