Today the Dr. Coll and his wife, Phyl, hosted the UMSOD Peds Division for their annual Oktoberfest 🥨🌭 Gathering.

Because of heavy rain 🌧️ last night, Dr. Horng’s kids’ sports games were canceled opening up a window in his schedule to finally attend this event.

Very few people know but the origin story of his pediatric dental career is the result of the care and generosity of people in the department like Dr. Tinanoff who gave him a job as a clinical instructor and Dr. Coll who gave him a part time job in York, PA.

It’s been about 10 years since Dr. Horng was last in York so he reminisced fondly about today about his drive up 83 to York and his bi-monthly lunches at Weiner World, a dive diner favorite of Dr. Coll’s or Panera. At that time in his life he also relied on generous friends who lent a sofa 🛋️ or bed 🛌 to sleep on so he could make the short drive up from Baltimore.

He worked there for 5 years as he was establishing RPD. These were the days where his predecessors modeled professionalism, leadership, and kindness, lessons he cherishes to this day.

Wherever and at whatever stage in career or life you are, please do yourself a favor and find these types of mentors in your life. Your life will never be forever changed for the better!

Happy 😊 Saturday!

Some of RPD’s original run 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♀️ club members hit the streets of Baltimore for the Baltimore Half Marathon. represented RPD as well as former team members Alina Vozna and Brian Rhim , a D2 and a D1 , at UMSOD.

Dr. Yang also ran in the race and was presented his race medal 🏅 by D3 Gianluca Baglioni .

It was so nice to see so much support from the dental 🦷🧚community. Congratulations to all those that participated. Let’s gooo!

Proof of life ✨!

Yesterday was Dr. Kim’s teaching day at the dental school and she spotted former RPD team member Raymond Amor. It’s hard to track this guy down because when he’s not in school, he’s likely to be out of town 🚇or even out of the 🛫country. He had a lot of schools to choose from during his application cycle. We’re glad he stayed close to home 🏠. We know he’s trying to live his best life as a dental student.

Tonight was the first meeting of the Chinese Dental Study Club for 2026-2027. Our speaker was Dr. Ahmed Sultan from UMSOD. He delivered the most engaging oral pathology lecture you’ll ever hear. His topic was pediatric oral pathology. It was such a great review!

The food was great, the company was great, and the room was packed. Dr. Horng was also able to bring RPD team member, Spencer Sherwood, for a taste 😋of what dental CE can be when paired with a Chinese banquet style 🥡🥢🥟 food. It was nice to see so many UMSOD graduates and even a D4 attend. Can’t wait for next month!

Over the years Dr. Horng has served in various roles on executive board and helps now mainly with program arrangement.

Happy Wednesday!

Last week was Homecoming at John F. Kennedy High School . Dr. Horng and JFK interns, Anthony and Destiny wanted to share their school spirit. Anthony is a star football 🏈 player for the Cavaliers. Destiny played on the the volleyball team last season. They have spent this semester learning about dentistry. They have been great to work with. We look forward to continuing to support them through their senior year in high school.

Happy 😊Monday!

It’s Mentorship Monday. Today RPD had a surprise visitor, who came home ✈️from dental 🦷🧚🏫school for fall 🍂break. The last time we saw Samat Borbiev was back when he was a junior at UMD with a strong interest in dentistry.

Fast forward 4 years and he is a D3 at Harvard University. We were grateful that he popped in to say hi to Dr. Horng as well as RPD team member Esther Lin, who recently completed a Harvard interview.

Samat shared with Dr. Horng and Esther how the dental school interview cycle went for him and why he ultimately chose to attend Harvard. We were happy to hear that he’s found a love for oral and maxillo-facial surgery.

Thank you Samat for sharing your experiences at Harvard with Esther. It’s great to hear you are doing well! We hope you had a restful fall break! Safe travels back to Boston.

Happy 😊 Friyay!

Today was Dr. Horng’s OR teaching at UMSOD. He had the pleasure of working with Dr. Erick Joseph again. It was a very efficient day. Our bed/chairside assistant was Jannat. She was great. She’s applying for dental school this cycle. Dr. Horng was able to give her some tips for this cycle.

And finally, the playlist 🎵was great 👍! What a nice way to finish the work week on.
