Preventing Jack-o-Lantern Teeth

Having only two or three teeth is great if you’re a jack-o-lantern. When you’re a person? Not so much. This Halloween, make sure you instruct your children in proper oral care – helping avoid the cavities and other dental problems that can arise from too much sugar.
Sugar does not cause cavities, but the bacteria that eats it does. By brushing after every sweet treat and flossing both morning and night, occasional increases in candy consumption – such as occurs around this time of year – is fine. However, when proper care is not taken, oral health issues, which may eventually include tooth loss, are more likely to occur. Children and adults alike should commit to a thorough daily routine for optimal oral health. Add to these twice-yearly visits with Dr. Lindsten and you greatly increase the chances that your natural teeth will remain strong, healthy, and in place for years to come.

It’s that time of year again! Have you remembered to schedule your kids back-to-school dental checkup?
Scheduling an appointment for your child right before he or she goes back to school is typically the most ideal time. This way, you can avoid having to take your child out of school for the appointment, and can check one more item off of your list of things to accomplish before they are back in the classroom again.

What will the dentist do?
Check overall dental health, clean the teeth, provide sealant treatment, take necessary x-rays and give you the Proof of School Dental Exam Form if needed.
All Illinois children in kindergarten, grade 2, and grade 6 are required to have an oral health examination.

Children’s teeth can become chipped or cracked quite easily, particularly if you have a child who is keen on playing sports. Repairing the damaged tooth helps to restore their smile while protecting the tooth. This is important as any sort of chip or crack in a tooth will let in bacteria, potentially causing infection and decay. If your child does have a chipped or cracked tooth then please schedule an appointment with Dr. Lindsten here at Lindsten Family Dentistry to find out if dental bonding is appropriate.

Dental bonding is a procedure that uses tooth colored composite resin to build up the damaged tooth to the correct size and shape, restoring its strength so your child will be able to use it normally. The nice thing about this treatment is that it is quick and non-invasive and can be completed during just one visit to our comfortable dental office. Afterwards your child’s smile will look much better and the damaged tooth will be fully protected. If your child is particularly prone towards knocking or chipping their teeth during sports then please ask us about our custom-made sports mouthguards for kids which will help protect their teeth, minimizing the risk of future chips and cracks.
