Juice as a healthy snack or drink is a LIE that is being sold to the parents of our patients by Big Fruit Juice Corporations. The amount of sugar in these drinks is excessive and will promote the development of decay as well as nutritional, general health and weight issues.
Some parents are reluctant to eliminate juice entirely, but that would be the best option in many cases. If juice remains in the kid's diet, we should be helping them to brush and floss after having these drinks.
To help reduce the development of decay in kids, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following:
0-1 years old: NO JUICE! None, Zip, Nada!
1-3 years old: 0-4 oz, in one sitting (no sippy cup or bottle)
4-6 years old: 4-6 oz, in one sitting (no sippy cup or bottle)
6+ years old: 8 oz, in one sitting
A juice box can range from 4.0-6.75 oz. For example - a Motts for Tots apple juice box is 6.75oz which is way more than a tot/toddler should be drinking.
