Dr. Glazier said there are very few articles outlining the dental anatomy of orangutans. Being that Patrick is a bred-in-captivity hybrid of two endangered species: The Bornean Orangutan- Pongo pygmaeus; and the Sumatran Orangutan- Pongo abelii, there were literally no articles for Dr. Glazier and his team to reference. The lesions were comprised of dense bone and although were not microscopically examined, were most certainly benign growths known as peripheral ossifying fibromas and most likely occurred as a result of Patrick wearing his teeth down (he is at the upper limits of age estimation of these animals in the wild - although there are so few of them, we don't really know) to the point that his gums were being traumatized every time he ate. This in turn caused the growths to enlarge further.
