Dear VCU community,

This evening, authorities in Memphis will release video from the tragic death of Mr. Tyre Nichols. Five Memphis police officers are charged with second-degree murder for his death.

Memphis officials have described the video and circumstances as “horrific.”

President Rao and I have spoken at length about this painful situation. It is senseless and heartbreaking that another African American has lost their life at the hands of those who had a responsibility to protect and serve them; not to cause harm to them.

It is natural to hold feelings of outrage, anger, pain and even disbelief over this situation. It also revives memories from the past few years that can be hard to cope with and to comprehend. For those of you who need them, VCU has resources to support you – please visit University Counseling Services or TimelyCare. VCU faculty members and staff can access a list of support resources on ramstrong.vcu.edu/.

We truly care about you and each of your lived experiences at VCU. We are here to support all of our students, faculty and staff in the coming days.

Sincerely,

Aaron J. Hart, Ed.D.

To VCU students, faculty and staff,

It is with profound sadness that we share news about the death of VCU student Mahrokh Khan. Just before 9 a.m. this morning, Mahrokh was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street at Laurel and West Main Streets. She was transported to VCU Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. The Richmond Police Department is actively investigating.

The VCU Division of Student Affairs and VCU Police join President Rao and the entire VCU community in extending our sincerest condolences to Mahrokh’s family, friends and all who knew her.

This is a time of sorrow for the entire VCU community. As we grieve together, please know that University Counseling Services resources are available to students who need assistance in dealing with this tragic event. Students can also utilize available resources through our Dean of Students Office, TimelyCare and You@VCU. VCU faculty members and staff can access a list of support resources on ramstrong.vcu.edu/.

We remind all community members to please be aware of the importance of sharing the roads in and around VCU. Using designated crosswalks, staying focused on traffic signals and sharing intersections are ways in which drivers, cyclists and pedestrians can stay safe.

While operating a phone while driving is illegal in Virginia, we also encourage cyclists and pedestrians not to use phones, or ear buds, while traveling, as these can distract you from your surroundings. Please follow posted speed limits, travel slowly through busy intersections and keep an eye out for others on roadways.

Sincerely,

Aaron J. Hart, Ed.D.
Vice President
VCU Division of Student Affairs

John Venuti, Chief of Police
Associate Vice President for Public Safety, VCU and VCU Health

August is National Breastfeeding Month! We're bringing awareness to this month by highlighting tongue-ties, which sometimes interfere with a baby’s ability to create a good latch and breastfeed successfully. Studies suggest tongue-ties affect between 5 and 10% of the world's population. Failure to successfully achieve feeding goals has been proven to be the no.1 contributor to Maternal Postpartum Depression. The good news is that tongue-ties can be treated using laser technology during an in-office procedure that only takes a few minutes.

The VCU School of Dentistry's office of Continuing Education is offering dental and medical professionals a comprehensive tongue tie course on Oct. 21 and 22. In this combination lecture and hands-on course, attendees will be introduced to the concept of laser frenectomies, an increasingly popular method by which dentists and physicians can treat tongue and lip ties in their patients. This participatory course will teach the medical and dental team how to accumulate all of the required data via history intake forms, perform a clinical examination to arrive at the correct diagnosis, evaluate when this procedure should be done, and then perform the procedure using laser technology. Registration is open through Oct. 17. For more information visit the VCU SoD CE site.

This comprehensive 2 day course will include the state of the art recommendation for the comprehensive Team Approach to Ankyloglossia Intervention, IBCLC, Provider, & Rehab Professionals. An all inclusive Assessment Tool will be shared. Criteria for Intervention will be discussed. Differences in ava...
