Each September, people unite from all corners of the world to raise awareness and to challenge the stigma that persists around Alzheimer’s disease and all types of dementia.

This year’s theme is tackling the persistent stigma and discrimination surrounding dementia by shining a spotlight on the timely and important issue of early diagnosis under the theme: “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters.”

Early diagnosis is the key to unlocking a whole raft of treatment, care and support options, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological. Also, raising awareness of the benefits that a diagnosis can provide to those living with the condition, alongside caregivers and the wider society.

Facts:
* Dementia is a term used to describe different brain disorders that affect memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion
* Early symptoms of dementia can include memory loss, difficulty performing familiar tasks, problems with language and changes in personality
* There is currently no cure for dementia, but a range of support is available for people with dementia and their caregivers
* Dementia knows no social, economic, or ethnic boundaries
* Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. Other causes include vascular disease, dementia with Lewy bodies and fronto-temporal dementia

Did you know there is a connection between Periodontal Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease?? 🦷🧠

Scientists have discovered that a gum-disease bacteria called Porphyromonas gingivalis may play a hidden role in Alzheimer’s disease.

In animal studies, infection with P. gingivalis led to brain changes strikingly similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s patients. Even more concerning, human studies have detected traces of these bacterial toxins in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s.
