An immediate implant goes into the socket the same day your tooth comes out. One surgery instead of two.

Here is what that actually means. In a traditional approach, the tooth is removed and the site is left to heal for a few months before the implant is placed. With an immediate implant, the implant is set into the fresh socket at the same appointment the tooth is removed.

Why it can help: fewer procedures, less total treatment time, and it can help preserve the bone and gum shape that tend to shrink once a tooth is gone.

It is not right for every case. Whether it works depends on how much healthy bone surrounds the socket, whether there is active infection at the site, the condition of the socket walls, and whether the implant can be seated firmly enough to stay still while it heals.

One distinction worth understanding clearly: placing an implant the same day is not the same thing as getting a tooth on it the same day. Those are two separate decisions, and one does not automatically follow the other.

Planning is what makes it possible. 3D imaging before surgery shows whether the bone will support immediate placement, and grafting around the implant is sometimes still needed to fill in the gaps.

Whether this is the right path is decided case by case, in coordination with your referring dentist.

A sore in your mouth that hasn't healed in two weeks is worth a phone call.

That's the simplest rule of thumb for oral cancer, and it's an easy one to remember. Most sores, canker spots, and irritated patches clear up on their own within a week or two. The ones that linger past that window are the ones to have looked at.

You can screen yourself in about two minutes, and once a month is plenty. Wash your hands, stand in front of a mirror with good light, and take a slow look around. Check the roof and floor of your mouth, the insides of your cheeks, your gums, and all sides of your tongue, including underneath and along the edges. Then feel along your jaw and neck for any lump or swelling.

A few things are worth noting if you see or feel them:

A sore or ulcer that hasn't healed after two weeks.
A white or red patch that wasn't there before.
A lump, thickening, or rough spot you can feel.
Numbness, tenderness, or a change in how things feel when you chew or swallow.

Finding a change early doesn't mean something is wrong. It usually means nothing is. But if something is starting, catching it early is what gives you the most options and the best head start. That's the whole point of checking.

Your regular dental visits matter here too, since your dentist is looking at the same areas with a trained eye. The monthly self-check just fills in the time between.

That click when you yawn or open wide? On its own, it is usually nothing to lose sleep over.

Lots of jaws click or pop, and for most people it is just the little cushion inside the joint shifting as things move. No discomfort when it happens, and no catching or trouble eating. That kind of sound tends to be a harmless quirk you can live with.

Here is when it is worth a closer look. Pain in the joint or around the ear. A jaw that locks, either stuck open or stuck closed. Trouble opening as wide as you used to. Any of those together with clicking is a reason to have it checked, rather than something to wait out.

If your jaw is sore, catching, or limiting how you eat and speak, that is the signal to reach out and have it evaluated.

An implant can't hold onto bone that isn't there.

That's the part that surprises a lot of people when we talk about bone grafting. A dental implant is essentially a small titanium post that fuses with your jawbone, so it needs enough bone volume to anchor into. When a tooth has been missing for a while, or was lost to injury or infection, the bone in that area tends to shrink. Sometimes there simply wasn't enough to begin with.

A bone graft rebuilds that foundation. It gives your body a scaffold to grow new bone into, restoring the height and width the site needs to support an implant. Depending on the situation, grafting can happen well before the implant goes in, or at the same time the implant is placed.

Here's the part that takes patience: this isn't a same-day fix. Bone heals on its own schedule, and a graft usually needs several months to mature before it's ready to carry an implant. That waiting period isn't lost time. It's the work that makes the final result stable and lasting.

So if a graft comes up in your treatment plan, it isn't an upsell or a cosmetic extra. It's the structural groundwork that gives an implant something solid to hold onto.

09/21/2026

Getting your wisdom teeth out at 18 is a different experience than getting them out at 35. And that difference isn't just about convenience or fitting it in before college. It comes down to biology.

In the late teens, wisdom tooth roots usually aren't fully formed yet. Shorter, less developed roots sit farther from the nerves in your lower jaw, which can make the extraction more straightforward. The surrounding bone is also softer and more forgiving at this age, so the teeth tend to come out with less resistance.

Recovery follows the same pattern. Younger tissue and bone tend to heal faster, and complications are generally less common than they are later in life.

As you get older, roots lengthen and anchor more firmly, bone becomes denser, and healing can take longer. None of that means removal isn't possible later. It happens all the time. It just tends to be a bigger undertaking.

This is why dentists and orthodontists often recommend an evaluation in the mid-to-late teens, even when there's no pain yet. Watching how the teeth are developing helps everyone plan ahead rather than react to a problem.

If your teen was told to have their wisdom teeth checked, an evaluation is a good place to start.
