🦷✨ Don’t Forget to Floss!

Brushing cleans the surfaces of your teeth, but what about the spaces in between? That’s where flossing comes in! 🧵

Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from areas your toothbrush can’t reach, supporting healthier gums and a cleaner, fresher smile.

💡 Quick tip: Make flossing a daily habit—your gums may thank you for it!

A few minutes a day can make a big difference. ❤️

Whether you're due for a routine cleaning, have been putting off treatment, or want to start the new year with a healthy smile, we're here to help.

🦷 Dental Care During Pregnancy

According to guidance from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Dental Association, preventive, diagnostic, and restorative dental care can be safely provided during pregnancy and should not be postponed.

This includes:
• Routine exams and cleanings
• Periodontal therapy, including scaling and root planing
• Necessary restorative treatment
• Dental radiographs with appropriate shielding
• Local anesthetics

Dental visits during pregnancy also create valuable opportunities for preventive education. Providers can counsel patients on oral hygiene, nutrition, managing nausea-related oral health concerns, and early childhood oral health.

Why oral health matters during pregnancy:
• Hormonal changes can increase the risk of oral health conditions
• Pregnancy tumors (pyogenic granulomas) may develop during the second trimester
• Exposure to gastric acid can contribute to enamel erosion
• Dietary changes may increase cavity risk

Routine dental visits help monitor changes and address concerns early — supporting healthier outcomes for both parent and baby.

🦷🎗️ April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️🦷

Every hour, someone loses their life to oral or oropharyngeal cancer (cancers of the mouth and throat). The good news is that early detection can greatly improve survival rates and reduce treatment complications.

👩‍⚕️ Regular oral cancer screenings during dental visits are one of the best ways to detect oral cancer early.

🔎 Check your mouth and talk to your dentist if you notice:
• A sore or ulcer that doesn’t heal within 2 weeks
• Red, white, or dark patches in the mouth
• A lump or thickening in the mouth or neck
• Difficulty swallowing or persistent sore throat
• Hoarseness or ongoing cough
• Ear pain on one side that doesn’t go away

⚠️ Risk factors include:
• To***co use
• Excessive alcohol use
• HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection

If you notice any symptoms that persist longer than two weeks, schedule an appointment with your dental professional.

💙 A quick screening can save lives.
Ask your dentist to include an oral cancer screening at every routine dental visit.

🦷Prophylaxis Cleaning Vs Periodontal Maintenance🦷

🧼Prophylaxis (Regular Dental Cleaning)
This is the standard cleaning most people get every 6 months when gums are healthy.
✔ Removes plaque and tartar above and slightly below the gumline
✔ Teeth are polished to remove surface stains
✔ Simple, preventive, and non-invasive
Best for patients with:
• Healthy gums
• Pocket depths under 4mm
• No bleeding, bone loss, or gum recession
• Stable X-rays
________________________________________
🦠 Periodontal Maintenance (After Gum Disease Treatment)
This is not a regular cleaning. It’s ongoing care after periodontal disease or deep cleaning (SRP).
✔ Cleans deep periodontal pockets
✔ Uses specialized instruments
✔ Monitors gum depth, inflammation, and bone levels
✔ Helps prevent disease from returning
Typically needed if you:
• Have been diagnosed with periodontitis
• Had a deep cleaning (SRP) in the past
• Have pocket depths 4mm+
• Show bleeding, bone loss, or loose teeth

🛠️ What’s the Difference in Treatment?
Prophylaxis
• Ultrasonic & hand scaling
• Flossing and polishing
• Goal: Maintain healthy gums
Periodontal Maintenance
• Deep subgingival cleaning
• Possible antimicrobial therapy
• Detailed gum measurements
• Goal: Stop disease progression & protect bone
________________________________________
📆 How Often Are They Done?
• Prophylaxis: Every 6 months
• Periodontal Maintenance: Every 3–4 months (bacteria return fast!)
________________________________________
💸 Cost & Insurance
• Prophylaxis: Often covered 100% (2x/year)
• Periodontal Maintenance: Usually covered ~80-50% after SRP (2-4x/year)
Procedure Codes:
• Prophy – D1110
• Perio Maintenance – D4910
________________________________________
⚠️ Why the Right Cleaning Matters
Skipping or Ignoring the proper treatment can lead to:
❌ Advanced bone loss
❌ Gum recession
❌ Loose teeth
❌ Chronic bad breath
❌ Increased risk of systemic issues like heart disease

Periodontal Maintenance is a medically necessary treatment for a chronic condition. If you've been diagnosed with gum disease, stick with the maintenance schedule. It’s the best defense against future tooth loss.
