Your toothbrush and floss are just the starting lineup. Here's what actually moves the needle on oral hygiene:

🪥 Electric toothbrushes — oscillating bristles reach plaque better than manual brushing, especially along the gumline. Studies show they reduce gingivitis by up to 11%.

🧵 Water flossers — effective for people with braces, implants, or wide gaps. They're gentler on sensitive gums but don't replace traditional floss entirely.

🫧 Antiseptic rinse — kills bacteria your brush and floss miss. Use it after meals if you can't brush, but don't rely on it alone—it's a supplement, not a substitute.

🪥 Interdental brushes — better than floss for larger spaces between teeth. Especially useful if you have bridges or implants.

👅 Tongue scrapers — reduce bacteria and freshen breath. Your tongue holds as much plaque as your teeth do.

The truth: the best tool is the one you'll actually use every single day. Consistency beats perfection. If you're unsure which aids work best for your mouth, we can recommend what fits your specific needs.

Choosing the right dental crown depends on your needs, budget, and the tooth's location. Here's what you should know:

**Porcelain Crowns** — The most popular choice. They match your natural tooth color perfectly and look completely natural. Best for front teeth where appearance matters most.

**Ceramic Crowns** — Similar to porcelain but even more lifelike. Excellent biocompatibility for patients with metal sensitivities. Slightly more expensive but worth it for visible teeth.

**Metal Crowns** — Gold, titanium, or other alloys. Incredibly durable and require minimal tooth removal. The downside? They're visible and not ideal for front teeth. Great for back molars.

**Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)** — A hybrid that combines durability with a natural appearance. The metal base provides strength while the porcelain exterior looks like a real tooth. A solid middle-ground option.

**Zirconia Crowns** — The strongest option available. Highly resistant to chipping and staining. More expensive, but they last longer and maintain their appearance for years.

Dr. Futch will recommend the best option based on the tooth's location, your bite, and your smile goals. During your exam, we'll discuss all options so you can make an informed decision.

Dental sealants are a proven preventive treatment that stops decay before it starts. Here's what you need to know:

What they do: Sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars). They seal out food particles and bacteria that cause cavities.

Adult dental sealants can be an excellent option for individuals who are prone to cavities, have deep grooves or pits in their molars, or want an extra layer of protection against tooth decay. Even with good brushing and flossing habits, food particles and bacteria can collect in hard-to-clean areas of the back teeth. Sealants help create a protective barrier, making these areas easier to keep clean and reducing the risk of future cavities.

The process: Application takes minutes. Your dentist or hygienist cleans and prepares the tooth surface, then applies the sealant material and hardens it with a special light. No drilling or anesthesia needed.

How long they last: Sealants typically protect for 5–10 years. We monitor them during regular checkups and touch up or replace them as needed.

Cost-effective prevention: One sealant costs far less than filling a cavity. Insurance often covers sealants for children and teens.

Schedule your next dental hygiene visit today, and we will let you know if sealants might be a good option for you.

Manual vs. Electric Toothbrushes: Which One Actually Works Better?

Both get the job done, but there are real differences:

Electric toothbrushes:
• Oscillate or rotate 3,000–48,000 times per minute, removing more plaque in less time
• Easier for people with limited mobility or arthritis
• Built-in timers help you brush the recommended 2 minutes
• Higher upfront cost ($25–$200+)

Manual toothbrushes:
• Just as effective when you use proper technique (soft bristles, gentle pressure, 2-minute duration)
• More affordable and portable
• Require more discipline and consistency
• Risk of brushing too hard, which damages gums

The verdict? The best toothbrush is the one you'll use correctly and consistently every day for AT LEAST 2 minutes. Most dentists agree that technique matters more than the tool. Focus on reaching all surfaces, especially the gum line.

Have questions about your oral care routine? Our team at Futch Dental can show you the right brushing technique during your next visit. At you next dental hygiene visit, your hygienist will help you choose the brush that is best for your particular dental needs.

Most children benefit from an orthodontic evaluation between ages 7 and 10. Here's why: by age 7, your child has a mix of baby and permanent teeth, making it easier to spot bite problems, crowding, and jaw development issues early.

Early evaluation doesn't always mean immediate braces. It lets an orthodontist:
• Monitor jaw growth and tooth development
• Catch problems before they become more complex
• Plan treatment timing for the best results
• Potentially avoid tooth extractions later

Signs to watch for:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Bite problems (overbite, underbite, crossbite)
- Difficulty chewing or speaking clearly
- Mouth breathing or tongue thrusting
- Teeth that don't meet when the mouth closes

Some kids need treatment around age 9–10, while others benefit from waiting until most permanent teeth come in (around 12–14). The timing depends on the specific issue and your child's development.

Schedule a consultation with us—we'll assess your child's needs and create a plan that works for your family. Visit futchdental.com or call (775) 746-1177 to book an appointment.

Mothers have a remarkable way of shaping our lives through love, strength, patience, and the countless little things they do each day that often go unnoticed.

Today, we celebrate all the women who have cared for, guided, supported, and loved others with a mother’s heart, including mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, adoptive mothers, mentors, caregivers, and the women who stepped in exactly when they were needed most.

Thank you for the lessons you teach, the comfort you provide, the traditions you create, and the unconditional love that stays with families for generations. The impact of a caring and compassionate woman can change a life forever.

Whether today brings celebration, reflection, gratitude, or cherished memories, we hope it is filled with love and meaningful moments shared with the people closest to your heart.

From all of us at Futch Dental, we wish you a beautiful and heartfelt Mother’s Day.

✨ Not every tooth that needs help has a cavity you can see.

Dental fillings can do more than treat decay. They can also restore strength, comfort, and function when teeth have been damaged over time.

🦷 Fillings may help with:

• Cavities caused by tooth decay
• Minor chips or cracks
• Teeth worn down from grinding or acid erosion

Treating small problems early can often help prevent bigger dental issues later.

If you’ve noticed sensitivity, discomfort, or changes in your teeth, it may be time for an evaluation.

Your dental visit is about more than just your teeth—it’s an important part of your overall health.

At every hygiene appointment, we include an oral cancer screening as part of your care. It’s a simple, painless process that allows us to check for early signs before they become serious.

Many people are surprised to learn that oral cancer can affect anyone. While to***co and alcohol use are known risk factors, HPV (human papillomavirus) is now a major contributor—and most adults will be exposed to it at some point without even knowing.

Because early-stage oral cancer often develops without pain, routine screenings are essential.

During Oral Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a great time to prioritize preventive care and stay proactive about your health.

Call today to schedule your appointment with our hygienist.
Your visit will include a comprehensive oral cancer screening for your peace of mind.
