The first 24 hours are the most important. Rest, ice the outside of your jaw, and stick to soft, cool foods (think yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, smoothies without seeds or a straw). Skip anything crunchy, spicy, or hot for a few days.

Follow your surgeon's aftercare instructions. That is how you avoid dry socket and get back to normal faster.

On June 19, 1865, news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas. More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

It's a day that holds both grief and joy. A reminder of how long freedom can take to arrive, and how deeply it is valued.
