In Pediatric Dentistry I have always noticed a trend between iron deficiency and cavities.

Before this new research came out, it appeared to be related to the iron supplement itself.

***Iron supplements stain teeth and can create a sticky layer on teeth that can lead to decay through time. Now there is evidence that deficiency itself puts kids at a higher risk for decay also.

***Iron deficiency can decrease salivary flow, and missing the antimicrobial effects of the Iron increases decay risks.

-Does your child take iron supplements?
-Does your child have anemia?
-Is your child’s dentist looking at their entire body to determine their cavity risk?

🦷 Why You Should Consider Oral Probiotics 🌱

Oral probiotics are gaining attention for their potential benefits in maintaining oral health. Here’s why you might want to add them to your routine:

Balance Oral Microbiome: Just like gut health, oral health depends on a balanced microbiome. Probiotics help promote the the growth of beneficial bacteria, reducing harmful ones.

Combat Bad Breath: Probiotics can help fight the bacteria that cause bad breath, leading to fresher breath naturally.

Prevent Cavities: Certain strains of probiotics can inhibit the growth of cavity-causing bacteria, contributing to stronger teeth.

Reduce Gum Inflammation: Probiotics may help lower inflammation and support gum health, potentially reducing the risk of periodontal disease.

Support Overall Health: A healthy mouth is linked to overall health. By maintaining oral health, you can also support your immune system and digestive health.

Tip: Always choose high-quality probiotics designed for oral health. Consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice!

🌬️😃Breathe Right, Smile Bright
Did you know that how you breathe has an affect on your oral health? 🤔

Why Nasal Breathing Matters:

✨ Oxygen Flow: Nasal breathing enhances oxygen intake in the body, promoting oral and overall health.

✨ Jaw Development: Proper nasal breathing supports optimal facial growth and jaw alignment, reducing dental issues (crooked teeth, grinding, cavities🦷)

✨ Reduced Risk of Dental Decay: Breathing through the nose keeps the mouth moist, providing natural protection against cavities.

▪️Nasal Breathing 101▪️
1. Be mindful of your breathing patterns.
2. Practice breathing exercises (buteyko, box breathing) to strengthen nasal airflow.
3. Clear your nasal passages with nasal sprays (Xlear)
3. Consult a functional airway-focused dentist for personalized advice!

It’s so important to prioritize nasal breathing for a healthier smile and body!

Does your child have Shark Teeth?!

Meaning do they have their permanent teeth erupting behind their baby teeth?

The permanent teeth find the easiest way to erupt and sometimes that is behind the baby teeth. This most often happens when they are lacking sufficient space for the permanent teeth.

Do the baby teeth need to be extracted????

Usually not. Typically the tongue will push the permanent teeth forward causing the baby teeth to become loose. Make sure you are encouraging your child to bite hard things with their front teeth, brush and floss the area well- it is a plaque trap, and wiggle their teeth when their hands are clean to help them fall out at home.

One thing to consider is early orthodontic intervention. Growing jaws at a young is easier and can help the permanent teeth have room and come in straight.

If your child has Shark Teeth, schedule an appointment to have their jaw development and airway evaluated.
