Fine all day, then you lie down and your tooth starts throbbing? There's a reason.

Why it spikes at night:
- Lying down sends more blood to your head
- Nighttime grinding you don't know you do
- Nothing left to distract you from it

What to do about it (and when the night ache means something bigger) is in the full guide.

A toothache always picks the worst time. Here's how to get through the night until you can be seen.

What actually helps:
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Take ibuprofen (it targets the inflammation)
- Cold compress on your cheek, 20 on, 20 off

What to skip, and the signs that mean don't wait at all, are in the full guide.

Most toothaches can wait a day or two. A few can't.

Call the same day if you have:
- Swelling in your face or jaw
- A fever with the pain
- A knocked-out or broken tooth

And there's a line where a dental problem turns into a medical emergency, the kind that sends you to an ER instead of a dentist. Knowing where that line is, plus what to do first, is in the full guide.

A tooth infection rarely stays quiet. It tells on itself.
Watch for these:

• Throbbing pain that won't quit
• Swelling in your gum, cheek, or face
• A bad taste, or a small bump on the gum

Two things worth knowing: antibiotics alone won't fix it, and the pain easing up doesn't mean it's gone. What's actually happening, and what to do about it, is in the full guide.

Bleeding gums during brushing are usually caused by gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease triggered by plaque buildup. With proper brushing, flossing, and professional cleaning, gum health can often be restored.

Pain when biting down usually occurs when pressure irritates the tooth’s nerve or supporting ligament. Common causes include cracked teeth, cavities, high fillings, or infection, and a dental exam is needed if pain lasts more than a few days.
