THE RISKS OF VISITING A SALON OR OTHER NON-DENTAL SETTING TO HAVE YOUR TEETH WHITENED

Unregulated whitening businesses are everywhere...beauty salons, mall kiosks, and even people performing these treatments right out of their homes.

Teeth whitening at a salon or other non-dental setting poses serious risks, primarily due to the lack the training to evaluate your oral health.

CONSIDER THESE RISKS before considering whitening your teeth in a non-dental setting:

*Unsupervised bleaching can strip away essential minerals, permanently weakening the tooth’s enamel. Once this enamel is lost, it does not grow back.

*Bleaching agents pe*****te the enamel to reach the dentin. Without a dentist ensuring your teeth and gums are healthy, you are at a much higher risk for lasting sensitivity to hot and cold foods.

*Whitening over undiagnosed cavities, exposed roots, or gum disease (gingivitis) can allow bleaching chemicals damage the nerves of your teeth.

*If you have crowns, veneers, or fillings, they will not whiten, resulting in a patchy, uneven smile.

LOOKING FOR A WHITER SMILE? VISIT YOUR DENTIST FIRST!

The first real step into whitening your teeth is to have a dental checkup and cleaning. The cleaning will remove calculus deposits that have built up so that teeth are more receptive to the bleaching. An examination by a dentist is also imperative, as you will need to be checked for any issues that may need to be addressed before you bleach, such as gum disease and decay. It is important to know that whitening products only change the color of natural tooth structure, therefore, fillings and/or crowns (caps) will not change color. That being said, natural teeth that are stained due to medications may not respond well to bleaching and other options may need to be discussed. In addition, your dentist will know the appropriate strength of material to give you.

Preparing for the birth of a baby is such an exciting time! During your pregnancy, you will work closely with your obstetrician to be sure that both you and your unborn baby are healthy - but don't forget your dentist, who is also an important part of your care during this time.

Rising and fluctuating hormones can exacerbate existing conditions but also create new ones, both in your body and in your mouth. Even if you didn't have gingivitis before pregnancy, it is not uncommon for a woman to develop this during pregnancy. It is more commonly seen in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, but pregnancy-related gingivitis can develop at any point and may even continue after delivery. Brush and floss regularly, and be sure to visit us to keep both you and your baby healthy.

FUN FACT: Did you know that your unborn baby will start to develop teeth in your second trimester?

Earth Day was yesterday - but we celebrate our earth every day.

The dental and administrative technology we use right in our office not only helps our patients but it also helps our Earth. But how?

ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDS: We have utilized electronic medical records since our office first opened in 2012. Maintaining a near-paperless environment means more trees for the earth to love ❤.

DIGITAL X-RAYS: Provides better diagnostic capabilities, emits less radiation to produce images and no chemicals are needed to develop film, as was done in the days of the darkroom!

DIGITAL IMPRESSIONS: Patients love our 3D scanner because we don't use plastic trays filled with goopy impression material, and the Earth loves our 3D scanner because those impressions do not end up in the trash and in our landfills!

Happy Earth Day 2026

Today is "April Fools Day," but poor oral health is no joke!
Oral health can affect your overall health...and medical research continues to prove this link.

Poor oral hygiene allows the bacteria we already have present in our mouths to multiply to the point where they cause gum inflammation, which allows decay, gum disease and dental infections to form. And that inflammation doesn’t just stay in your mouth – it travels through your body, causing a host of secondary problems.
