Porcelain restorations are a staple in dentistry for replacing tooth decay, but depending on the extent of the decay one of these three restorations will be used.
Small decay but too large for a filling will need a inlay which is the most conservative porcelain restoration that retains as much natural tooth structure as possible.
Decay too big for an inlay, but not large enough for a crown requires an onlay which is still a conservative restoration but a larger portion of the tooth has to be replaced with porcelain.
A crown is when the tooth has to be fully covered with porcelain due to extensive decay. It is the strongest of the porcelain restorations.
These types of restorations are all stronger and longer lasting than a typical filling.
