🦷 What if your gum health is part of the bigger picture of healthy aging? 👀❤️
Periodontitis, or advanced gum disease, is more than a dental concern. Chronic inflammation in the gums has been associated with increased inflammation throughout the body and has been linked in research to conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. 🧠❤️
A recent clinical trial explored an interesting question: Could targeting inflammation help support periodontal treatment? Researchers studied omega-3 fatty acids combined with low-dose aspirin alongside periodontal care and found promising results. 🔬🦷
Omega-3s, particularly EPA and DHA found in foods like salmon, sardines, trout, and mackerel, play an important role in regulating inflammatory processes. 🐟
But here’s the important takeaway: nutrition can support overall health, but eating omega-3-rich foods does not treat periodontitis. And aspirin should never be started for gum disease without guidance from your healthcare professional due to potential bleeding risks and medication interactions. ⚠️
The best defense against gum disease remains consistent oral hygiene, regular dental visits, and early periodontal treatment when needed. 🪥✨
Your gums are part of your body — and taking care of them is an important part of taking care of you. 💙

🦷 That “medieval torture device” isn’t trying to make you jump out of the chair! 😅
As periodontists, we gently use a periodontal probe to check the health of the tissue around your teeth and evaluate the integrity of the gum attachment. 🩷
Healthy periodontal pockets are generally 0–3 mm. 📏 Deeper measurements may indicate periodontal pockets and gum disease, while gum recession can tell a different story—even when there isn’t a traditional pocket.
So what are we looking for? 👀🦷 Pocket depth🩸 Bleeding and inflammation🩷 Gum tissue condition📸 Clinical changes🩻 Bone levels on X-rays
Together, periodontal probing, dental X-rays, and clinical photographs help us determine what’s really happening with your gums and create the right treatment plan.
And yes—probing should be gentle. If your gums are inflamed, it may feel uncomfortable, but it should never be about seeing how far you jump! 😄
Healthy gums start with knowing what’s happening beneath the surface. 🦷✨

🦷 Can receding gums grow back?
Usually, gum tissue doesn’t simply grow back on its own. But there is good news! ✨ When gum recession is treated and the area is kept healthy, a periodontal gum graft can help restore coverage around the tooth.
A common approach is an autogenous gum graft, using tissue from the palate. As the graft heals and remains healthy, “creeping attachment” can sometimes provide additional coverage over time. 🪥
To help protect your gums:✅ Brush gently with an extra-soft toothbrush✅ Floss consistently✅ Avoid aggressive brushing that can traumatize gum tissue✅ See a periodontist if you notice gum recession, sensitivity, or exposed tooth roots
Early evaluation can make a difference! ❤️

🤰🦷 Pregnancy can change more than your body - it can change your oral health, too.
A recent pilot study highlighted an important connection between pregnancy, Type 1 diabetes, and periodontal health. Researchers found that pregnant women with Type 1 diabetes had more sites of bleeding on probing, higher plaque levels, and greater periodontal inflammatory burden compared with pregnant women without Type 1 diabetes. The study also found that a longer duration of Type 1 diabetes was associated with worse periodontal findings.
Why does this matter? 👇
Pregnancy already brings hormonal changes that can affect the gums, and diabetes can further influence inflammation and the body’s response to oral bacteria. That makes consistent oral hygiene, periodontal monitoring, and communication between your dental and medical providers especially important. 🪥✨
If you’re pregnant and living with diabetes, don’t ignore bleeding, swollen, or tender gums. Healthy gums are an important part of overall health during pregnancy. ❤️

Advancing implant dentistry starts with staying at the forefront of innovation. 🦷💻
At North Raleigh Periodontics & Implant Center, continuing education isn’t just something we attend—it’s something we value, facilitate, and bring to our dental community. 📚✨
We recently gathered with fellow dental professionals for an informative evening focused on the evolution of ZimVie dental implants and the latest advances in digital implant technology.
A highlight of the evening was the ZimVie Encode system, which uses the unique markings on the implant to digitally capture critical information such as implant size, height, width, and flare. This information helps determine the precise abutment specifications, including angulation and emergence profile, creating a more streamlined and predictable restorative workflow. 🖥️🦷
From implant uncovering to the final crown, digital technology is continuing to transform how dental implants are planned, restored, and delivered.
We’re grateful to everyone who joined us at Winston’s Grille for an evening of learning, collaboration, and great conversation! 👏🥂
A special thank-you to our speaker and to all of the doctors who joined us—we’re proud to be part of a dental community committed to continually raising the standard of patient care.
📸 Swipe through to see highlights from the evening!

👀 Have your teeth suddenly started looking longer?
It may not be your imagination.
One of the most common reasons teeth appear longer is gum recession. While some recession develops gradually from years of brushing habits, clenching, grinding, or normal wear and tear, a sudden change could be a sign of gum inflammation or periodontal disease that deserves attention.
🦷 Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile, and gum disease doesn't always cause pain. In fact, gingivitis and early periodontal disease can develop silently while inflammation is damaging the tissues that support your teeth.
If you've noticed:➡️ Teeth that look longer➡️ Receding gums➡️ Increased tooth sensitivity➡️ Changes in your gumline
Don't ignore it. Early diagnosis can help protect your gums, preserve your teeth, and often lead to simpler treatment options.
At North Raleigh Periodontics & Implant Center, we specialize in diagnosing and treating gum recession, periodontal disease, and other conditions affecting your oral health. If something doesn't look or feel right, we're here to help.
📞 Schedule an evaluation with our team and let us help you keep your smile healthy for years to come.
