One of the biggest mistakes dentists make is underestimating what great assistants are capable of.

A strong dental assistant doesn’t just help the doctor, they help grow the business.

When you invest in your team, train them, and give them ownership, everything changes.

Most teams want more responsibility. Most dentists just never give them the opportunity.

Truth: Most hygiene departments are leaving serious money on the table.

And it's not because of missing patients, it's because they’re missing opportunities right in front of them.

Take external photos. Patients say yes when they can actually see the problem.

Stop doing bloody prophys when it’s clearly not the right diagnosis.

Build real perio protocols into the practice.

And honestly? Most patients probably need a night guard and nobody’s even talking to them about it.

The goal isn’t to “sell” more dentistry.

The goal is to diagnose better, communicate better, and help patients understand what’s actually going on.

That’s how great hygiene departments grow.

If you’re a dentist in your 20s or 30s, listen to me carefully.

Three things matter more than you think.

First: never stop learning.

But, don’t become a CE ju**ie collecting courses and implementing nothing. Learn with intention. Add skills that actually change your career.

Second: learn how to save money early.

Saving gives you freedom. Freedom lets you make smarter decisions instead of desperate ones.

And third: take your health seriously.

Your body, your mind, your energy… this profession will test all of it over time.

Dentistry is a marathon.

The dentists who last the longest usually aren’t the smartest. They’re the most disciplined.

Dentists, let me teach you two of the biggest lessons I had to learn in my career:

1. Instead of fighting insurance, I had to figure out how to use it to bring patients into the practice and help more people get treatment.

2. Instead of obsessing over financing fees, I realized third-party financing gave patients access to care they otherwise couldn’t afford.

That changed everything.

A lot of dentists are still taking advice from people who built practices in a completely different era.

Dentistry changed. Patients changed. Business changed.

You'll learn better from people actively doing it right now.

Here's what 99% of dentists are doing:

They're trying to grow their practice by doing more cleanings, taking every insurance plan, and saying yes to everybody.

That’s a fast way to burn out.

The practices growing right now are doing something different:

1. They know their numbers.
2. They market intentionally.
3. They attract the right patients.
4. They add procedures that actually move production.

And, most importantly, they stop collecting CE like it’s a hobby and start implementing.

You don't need to do everything.

You need a practice model that actually makes sense for the life you want to build.

Selling won't fix the tired. Only building does. 🦷

I've watched dentists sign DSO deals thinking the check buys them out of the exhaustion.

It doesn't.

You either keep drilling under someone else's quota… or you walk away from the only thing that was paying you.

The tired follows you either way. 😮‍💨

Here's what nobody says out loud 👇

The tired was never about money. It was about a practice that can't run without you standing in it.

So build the one that runs without you. And watch what happens — the DSO offer stops looking like a rescue and starts looking like an option.

You get to choose. ✅
That's the whole game.

I’m launching a new call-in series for dentists and practice owners.

Here’s how it works:
You book a time, we hop on a live call, and we record the conversation as-is.

No script.
No rehearsed answers.
No overproduction.

And yes… sometimes that means the audio is a little rough too.

But that’s kind of the point.

These are real conversations about what’s actually happening inside your practice: what’s working, what’s not, where you feel stuck, and what you’re trying to improve.

The goal is simple: create a space where dentists can talk honestly about the challenges of running and growing a practice with someone who genuinely wants to help.

So here’s show one.

If you’d want to be part of a future episode, comment “CALL-IN” or send us a message and we’ll get you scheduled for the next one.

Stop blaming corporate dentistry for your practice slowing down.

They’re not winning just because they’re “corporate.” They’re winning because they’re really consistent in a few areas that most practices overlook.

And the reality is, you can apply the same things without turning your practice into something it’s not.

This isn’t about copying them. It’s about paying attention to what’s working and using it in a way that fits how you want to run your practice.

Here are three shifts I consistently see in the practices that are actually growing.

They say, “don’t spend on Continuing Education early." Here's why I don’t agree.

Reps matter, but direction matters more.

You can spend years getting “faster”… or you can get better early and change your entire ceiling.

The right CE shortens the timeline. The wrong path drags it out.

If you’re serious about growth, don’t just work more. Work on the right things sooner.
