Many parents want to know if their children will need braces.

We can detect many bite alignment issues while children still have their baby teeth. In some cases, early orthodontic treatment can correct these issues and reduce or eliminate the need for braces later on. In other cases, treatment needs to wait until the child’s permanent teeth grow in, which may require braces.

It’s important to bring your child in for regular dental examinations beginning on their first birthday. This lets us monitor their development and identify any alignment problems early. Call us today to book an appointment!

Ever wondered the difference between a dental bridge and an implant? Dental bridges replace a missing tooth by attaching the bridge to the surrounding teeth using crowns or wings. They are a lower-cost solution and a good option if the patient has experienced bone loss where the tooth is missing. However, bridges cannot prevent further bone loss. They can cause strain on the neighboring teeth and may need to be replaced periodically.

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed in the bone with an abutment and crown attached. The implant integrates with the bone for a stronger, more natural functionality and can prevent bone loss. Because it stands alone, it doesn't cause strain on the neighboring teeth. A dental implant is also a longer-term solution for missing teeth with many implants lasting a lifetime. However, implants cost more than bridges and sometimes are not covered by insurance.

Deciding between the two options can be tricky, so we offer to review all information with patients and look at any insurance policies to help them make an informed decision. Book a consultation today!

Even if you’re wearing full dentures, it’s absolutely important to come to see us for regular dental hygiene checkups.

During these visits, we’ll check for any changes in how your dentures fit, check the health of the tissue under your denture, including an oral cancer screening, and provide oral care instruction to keep your mouth healthy and make your dentures fit better, longer.

Along with taking care of your dentures (brushing and soaking them as required), be sure you’re cleaning your gums and tongue (and any remaining teeth) daily to keep your mouth healthy.

Many everyday things can cause teeth to change color — ci******es, red wine, coffee, certain medications — and teeth naturally change color as we age because the outer enamel layer becomes thinner. Ask us about options to keep your teeth looking healthy and bright.

Tap water is the best beverage for your child’s teeth. It’s sugar-free, and it washes away leftover food and the acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. Fluoridated water also strengthens tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to decay. So skip the juice and encourage your child to reach for water the next time they are thirsty!

People who floss regularly benefit from healthier teeth and gums, fewer cavities, and fresher breath. It’s easy to make flossing a regular habit and it doesn’t always have to be done at bedtime, just once per day. Floss while watching TV or listening to music, or even in the shower!

While brushing and flossing help to remove plaque — and regular hygiene visits are important, too — fluoride is a secret weapon that helps in a different way.

This mineral not only has the power to prevent tooth decay, but it can also repair your teeth when they’re in the earliest stages of tooth decay.

When was your last in-office fluoride treatment? Call (860) 928-5334 today to schedule your next hygiene visit, and be sure to ask us if a fluoride treatment would be right for you.

Children’s baby teeth are very important. They help children speak, chew, and smile. They also hold space for their adult teeth that are still growing. If a baby tooth is lost too soon, it can affect the alignment of the adult teeth later. That’s why babies should go for their first dental exam after they get their first tooth. Braces are used to reposition teeth to make them straighter. Most braces work with a combination of brackets, wires, and elastics. First, a metal bracket is cemented to each tooth. Then a wire is placed in all the brackets. The wire is held in place by an elastic (also called a ligature) on each bracket. This keeps the wire in place and allows each tooth to move individually - over time the pressure from the wire on the brackets gradually realigns and repositions the teeth to the proper positions.

We may use a few different types of elastics on your braces. In addition to the ligatures, your dentist might use a special elastic called a powerchain to close spaces between teeth. We may also attach a tiny spring to the braces to change the spacing between individual teeth.

Elastics also come in a rainbow of fun colors, so they’re a great way to dress up your braces!

One simple way to check if you’ve done a good job brushing and flossing is the tongue test! Run your tongue across the surface of your teeth, especially at the gum line. If you find any areas that don’t feel smooth and slick, you may need to give those areas some extra attention!

A properly fitted sports guard can protect your teeth from serious injuries, but unfortunately, not everyone understands the difference between a custom sports guard from a dentist and a boil-and-bite variety from a drugstore.

A custom sports guard is made to fit your teeth exactly, cushioning them comfortably and protecting them from impact.
Because boil-and-bite sports guards are made with thinner materials and don’t fit snugly to the teeth, they leave athletes more exposed to potential injuries.

There’s no question in this comparison — custom sports guards will win every time! Give us a call if you’re curious about the process or would like to have one made.

Ready for your close-up? Our patients often express interest in whitening their teeth for a special event, like a wedding, reunion, graduation, milestone birthday, or special vacation.

Depending on the whitening treatment you choose, you may want to start as early as three months prior to your special event. Then the majority of the whitening will take place ahead of time, and you can have a “booster” treatment right before you really need it.

If you have a special event coming up and you’re curious about your teeth whitening options, please reach out to us and we can discuss it further.
