If a cavity is big enough a crown might be recommended. A crown is a tooth shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to protect any natural tooth that is left once and decay is removed. At the beginning of the procedure, the tooth and surrounding area will be numbed. The dentist will then make a mold of your tooth to be used for the temporary crown. Once a mold is created the dentist will remove any of the unhealthy tooth and add filling material so the crown has something to hold onto. The tooth will then be shaped and prepped for the crown. This involves shaving the sides of the tooth down so there will be space to put the crown over the entire tooth. Once the tooth is prepped an impression will be made for the final crown. The dentist will cement a temporary crown until they receive your final crown. It usually takes about 2 weeks and then you will come back in for your permanent crown to be put in.

Cavities cause your tooth to weaken and become soft. Getting a filling is the process of removing any unhealthy tooth and then restoring the tooth so it can function properly and pain-free. At the beginning of the procedure you will get some local anesthesia to numb the area. When the area is numb any decayed tooth will be removed and the area will be cleaned and prepared for the filling material. Once the filling material is placed and shaped to mimic your natural tooth shape it will be cured (hardened) with a bright light. Your new filling will then be polished and once the numbness wears off you are ready to go on with your normal eating and drinking routine.
