Somehow, I lost a year. It was 2021. I'm not quite sure what happened or where it went, but it is gone and now it's 2022. Maybe I had the mistaken notion that 2021 was going to be a "normal" year. Wow, did that go out the window! 2021 became a COVID year just like 2020 and with new varients on a wee...

Are you just "over it"!?

So much for a two week plan for getting over COVID. (Remember that was the thought last year?). Well, a year has come and gone. Many things have changed. I think some for the better. We are now much more aware of aerosols and their ability to spread disease. We are always on the lookout for products that will help us do that.

Now we have new strains of COVID coming along. Supposedly they target younger people. All the more reason to stay vigilant. Keep using a product like the Dental Flex Arm to hold your HVE, so that you are actually using high volume evacuation during your appointments, and not just wishing you could.

Someday, COVID will be a dim memory, but using your HVE will be a normal part of dental hygiene life. Let's work together to keep the standards high. We are all in this together- no matter how long.

2021. Hopefully a year we will remember with more fondness than 2020. As we move into a new year, it is a good time to remind ourselves of standard of care during any scenario. Luckily, most dental offices have not had to make major changes, because they were already doing what they were supposed to be doing. One of those things includes using high volume evacuation (HVE) during all aerosol producing procedures.

Sadly, there are still hygienists working without HVE- even during COVID! Do you use HVE during ultrasonic use? You should. Do you use HVE during polishing? You should.

The Dental Flex Arm creates a "third arm" to aid in holding the HVE cords. It can be used both extra and intra-orally. It helps those using it maintain better ergonomics. So many benefits- all for the cost of one or two days of hiring an assistant to suction.

Well, we've made it through a shut down, a reopening and now we are looking at a resurgence of the virus through the winter. How are you all doing with this? What does your "new normal" look like? I hope you are feeling safe and putting into practice all the things you need to do to keep your patients safe. Believe it or not, there are still dental personnel practicing without HVE while using aerosol producing procedures. There is no reason for this in today's world. The Dental Flex Arm is one solution to this problem, as it holds the HVE so the hygienist can perform the standard of care that is best for the patient. We all know the benefits of the ultrasonic scaler to the hygienist as well as for our patients. Less hand and wrist fatigue, Reduction of bacterial endotoxins. More efficient removal of calculus- the list goes on... With the use of this amazing technology comes some responsibility. We must use HVE, which was the "normal" even before our "new normal". Please keep the standard of care high, and care for your patients as well as yourselves.

A description of the Dental Flex Arm and it's value to dental hygienists, especially when using HVE.

Many months have gone by since COVID invaded our world, our workplace and our way of life. Are you feeling like you are ready to have it over and done with? I think many of us are feeling that way. There have been many good things to come out of this pandemic, and many more to come, I am sure. One of the good things is that we have had to take a good look at our standard of care and ask ourselves if we are really doing the best we can for our patients. Have we just ignored high volume evacuation as dental hygienists, because it was too difficult to handle? Have we perhaps been lax in our disinfecting procedures because we don't have enough time? These are issues we all deal with as hygienists in today's world.

So now the question becomes... what do we do? Do we just keep doing what we have always been doing and hope for the best, or do we try to step up our game? I hope the latter is the case. Look for products that make your life easier and safer. Pre-procedural rinses to lower the possibility of infected aerosols...something to hold your HVE, such as the Dental Flex Arm...great disinfectant cleaners such as Bio-surf, which has a 3 minute kill time for most bacteria and viruses. There are wonderful products out there. We just need to put them into use and not slip back in to the old and "easy" ways we have always done things. We live in a different world, and even if we hope it's a bad dream, it's time to wake up and make some changes!

Having a hard time controlling aerosols? I have helped to develop a device called the Dental Flex Arm that will make your job easier. It is a flexible arm that attaches with a super strong suction cup. The Universal Clip allows you to attach any dental hose to the flex arm and then you can position it however you need. Take a look at dentalflexarm.com The dental hygiene students at UVU are using it in the clinic and they love it! https://youtu.be/SQMU7W9GKSY
