Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that starts quietly when harmful bacteria, plaque, and tartar build up below the gumline. Left untreated, this infection causes chronic inflammation, leading gums to pull away from the teeth, bone loss, and eventually teeth loss. It can also lead to heart complications.
COMMON SYMPTOMS
-Red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums (especially when brushing or flossing)
-Receding gums that make teeth look longer
-Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
-Loose or shifting teeth, or changes in your bite
-Pain when chewing or pus between teeth and gums

-Poor oral hygiene habits
-Genetics, hormonal changes, and certain medications
TREATMENT
Scaling and Root Planing (a deep cleaning below the gum line), is a procedure done by a dental hygenist at your general dentist office. The hygenists removes subgingival calculus and detoxifies root surfaces which creates an environment where gum tissues can firm up, reduce pocket depths, and heal.
Regular dental checkups and cleanings along with good oral health habits can prevent and help treat Periodontal Disease.
