Dr. Taylor’s Favorite Tips!!

🦷 Cavity-prone? Let’s talk acidity.

People who are prone to cavities may have a more acidic oral environment. This is why juice and soda get a bad rap! It’s not just the sugar — acid can weaken enamel, making it more vulnerable to decay.

P.S. You can still enjoy your favorite soda or energy drink! Try to finish it within 30 minutes, then rinse with water when you’re done.

🦷 Not all mouth rinses are created equal.

Some mouth rinses are highly acidic and may not be the best choice for cavity-prone patients. We have options in-office to help you find what works best for your smile!

🦷 Let’s talk floss.

Glide floss may slide easily between your teeth, but Dr. Taylor prefers a thicker, woven floss like Cocofloss to help remove plaque and debris more effectively. Think of it as a little plaque sponge! Bonus points: applying a small amount of fluoride or hydroxyapatite toothpaste to your woven floss may help target cavity-prone areas between your teeth.

🦷 Bleeding gums aren’t something to ignore.

Healthy gums shouldn’t regularly bleed. Bleeding can be a sign of gum inflammation and may sometimes be associated with hormonal changes or nutritional deficiencies. If it’s happening consistently, it’s worth getting checked out!

🦷 Brushing harder doesn’t mean brushing better.

Dr. Taylor’s favorite toothbrush for patients with gum recession? The Nimbus toothbrush! It’s incredibly soft and can be a great option for those who tend to brush a little too aggressively. Not every toothbrush is right for every patient, so ask us what’s best for your smile.

✨ Your daily habits make a difference. Save these tips for your next oral care reset!

Electric vs. Manual: A Dentist’s Perspective

The short answer: The best toothbrush is the one you use correctly, twice a day, for two full minutes. That said, most of us lean toward electric.

✨Why we often recommend electric:
-Studies show modest but consistent reductions in plaque and gum inflammation compared to manual
-Oscillating-rotating and sonic heads clean well with less technique required
-Built-in timers fix the most common problem we see: brushing too briefly
-Pressure sensors help patients who scrub too hard and cause recession or abrasion
-Easier on patients with braces, implants, crowns, or limited dexterity

✨When manual is perfectly fine
-You have excellent technique and are consistent
-Budget or travel is a factor
-You simply prefer it and will actually use it

✨What we care about more than the brush type
-Soft bristles only. Medium and hard bristles wear enamel and gums
-Light pressure. You’re polishing, not scrubbing
-Replace the head every three months, or sooner if bristles fray
-Don’t skip floss or interdental cleaning. No toothbrush reaches between teeth
-Fluoride toothpaste, whichever brush you choose

Bottom line: We’d rather see a patient with a $3 manual brush and great habits than a $200 electric one used poorly. But if you’re on the fence, electric gives you a built-in advantage.

3 things your dentist wishes you’d stop doing… 👀🦷
We’re all guilty of at least one of these!

🧵 Skipping the floss
Brushing alone doesn’t get everything. Flossing helps remove plaque and food between your teeth, where cavities and gum problems love to start.

🖤 Using charcoal toothpaste
We know the idea of a whiter smile is tempting, but charcoal toothpaste can be abrasive and may wear down your enamel. There are safer ways to brighten your smile!

📅 Putting off your dental cleanings
Just because nothing hurts doesn’t mean everything is fine. Regular checkups help catch small problems before they turn into bigger ones.

A little extra care now goes a long way toward keeping your smile healthy. 🤍
