Behind every great oral surgeon is an even better Surgical Assistant! 😎

This week is all about celebrating our assistants!

Surgical assistants are truly the "unsung heroes" of the dental office—they keep the sterile field tight, the patients calm, and Dr. Reynolds on track, and these professionals do it all with precision and grace.

We couldn't provide the level of care we do without their expertise and dedication. Our assistants are the backbone of our team, and we’d be lost without them!

To Hannah, Natalie and Kat: Thank you for your hard work, your sharp eyes, and for being the best teammates we could ask for.

Is your dental insurance actually working for YOU? 🦷
Right now, insurance CEOs are taking home millions in bonuses while everyday families are forced to delay dental care because of rising premiums and low coverage limits.
It’s time for a change. We believe your premium dollars should go toward your treatment, not corporate payouts.
📢 TAKE ACTION: Reach out to your state legislators today! Tell them we need "Dental Loss Ratio" (DLR) reform for dental insurance to ensure that a fair percentage of our premiums is spent on actual patient care.

New data released by the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner raises serious questions about how dental insurance premiums are being used in our state.

The report shows that West Virginia consistently ranks below the national average for dental loss ratios. In plain terms, less of each premium dollar is going toward patient care. In some West Virginia dental plans, as little as 43 cents of every premium dollar is spent on care.

Families pay for dental insurance expecting access to care. Instead, too many face confusion, delays, and denials. When most of the money goes somewhere else, patients lose. This data helps explain why so many West Virginians struggle to use the coverage they pay for and why transparency in dental insurance matters.

That is why More for Your Smile is pushing for patient-focused dental insurance reform in West Virginia, including clear reporting on how premium dollars are spent.

Even a single missing tooth can initiate a domino effect, leading to significant dental and structural changes over time.

1️⃣ Bite Disruption
Your teeth are designed to function as a single, balanced unit to maintain proper alignment and chewing efficiency.

🔹Shifting teeth: When a tooth is lost, neighboring teeth begin to drift or tilt into the empty space due to the loss of contact and support.

🔹Supra-eruption: The opposing tooth may start to over-erupt toward the gap because it no longer meets resistance during biting.

🔹Malocclusion: These changes disturb bite harmony, causing uneven tooth wear, jaw strain, TMJ stress, jaw pain, and even chronic headaches.

2️⃣ Jawbone Weakening (Bone Resorption)
The jawbone depends on regular stimulation from tooth roots to maintain its strength and density.

🔹Loss of stimulation: After tooth loss, the bone in that area no longer receives chewing forces.

🔹Rapid bone loss: Studies show that up to 25% of the surrounding bone volume can be lost within the first year if the tooth is not replaced.

🔹Structural instability: Progressive bone loss weakens the support of nearby teeth, increasing the risk of further tooth loss.

3️⃣ Gradual Facial Changes
Although subtle at first, long-term bone loss and bite collapse can alter facial appearance.

🔹Sunken look: Reduced bone support can cause the cheeks and lips to lose fullness.

🔹Premature aging: Loss of facial height contributes to deeper wrinkles and thinning lips.

🔹Collapsed jaw profile: Advanced lower jawbone resorption may rotate the chin forward or upward, creating an aged or collapsed facial appearance.

Many people think gum disease only affects the mouth — but its impact can extend throughout the body.

Periodontal (gum) disease is more than bleeding gums or loose teeth.
It is a chronic inflammatory infection that allows oral bacteria and inflammatory mediators to enter the bloodstream, influencing multiple organ systems.

Scientific research has linked untreated periodontal disease with:

🔹 Cardiovascular disease – increased risk due to chronic inflammation

🔹Diabetes – a bidirectional relationship affecting blood sugar control

🔹Respiratory diseases – aspiration of harmful oral bacteria

🔹Rheumatic conditions – inflammation-related joint involvement

🔹Neurodegenerative disorders – including associations with Alzheimer’s disease

The mouth is not separate from the body.
It is a gateway to systemic health.
Maintaining healthy gums through professional dental care, daily oral hygiene, and early periodontal treatment is not cosmetic dentistry — it is preventive medicine.
