Fun with flags, day 4: After the flag act of 1794 gave our nation's flag 15 stars and 15 stripes (the version Francis Scott Key, in 1814, wrote “The Star Spangled Banner” about), the flag act of 1818 solidified a formula for future growth and expansion. It set the stripes at 13 to represent the original colonies, and set the stars to change every july 4th following a state’s addition to the union. Thus, the current number of stars sits at 50.
We hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July.

Day 3 of Fun with Flags brings what is fondly known as the Betsy Ross flag. In 1777, a Native American by the name of Thomas Green sent a petition to the government for an official American flag as protection while he traveled through treacherous lands towards Philadelphia. Three strings of wampum beads were sent to entice Congress to expedite the process, and within 10 days, they passed the Flag Act of 1777 which stated “Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” This act was passed on June 14th, a day now known as Flag Day in the United States.

Oops! Day 2 of was posted on Instagram but didn't show on Facebook! Pretend it's July 2nd. ;)
Our second flag of the series is the Grand Union flag. Some historical documents credit Rebecca Flower Young with making the first Grand Union flag ( https://www.womenhistoryblog.com/2011/12/rebecca-young.html ), while others credit Margaret Manny with that honor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Manny). Colonists had shown their unrest through protests at the Boston Massacre of 1770 and the Boston Tea Party of 1773. The “Grand Union” or “Continental Colors” flag was created in 1775 to represent the troops who were preparing to battle for independence from Britain.

Welcome back to another year of Fun with Flags: the Crumpton family tradition of hanging the historical flags of the US, leading up to July 4th. We always start with the British Union flag, representing European colonization in the early 1600s. This flag (showing the cross of St George on top of the Scottish Cross of St Andrew) King James was created in 1606, after King James of Scotland inherited the English throne and United the two countries and their two flags.

We are so thankful for our patients who stop by just to make us smile! We hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving!
