Have you had a deep cleaning in the last few years? Or do you get regular periodontal cleanings every 3-4 months instead of the usual 6-month appointments?

If so, I highly recommend talking to your dentist about Arestin. Arestin is a prescription drug that helps fight gum disease and is often covered 100% by health insurance. However, the application of this medicine by your dentist can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,200 and is not covered by dental insurance.

I just had a new patient come in last week who had some fillings and a crown done 6 months ago by her old dentist. Since then, she had been experiencing discomfort in her jaw throughout the day and difficulty sleeping. She thought her fillings and crown were done well and didn't think twice about them being the cause. When she shared this discomfort, we diagnosed the problem: her fillings were done "too high." A simple occlusal adjustment fixed it.

I wanted to share some important information about occlusal adjustments after getting fillings or crowns. Often, this critical step is skipped, and it can take a while before you notice anything wrong.

Have you ever had a filling or crown done where the shape feels higher or deeper than before? You might have trouble resting your jaw, chewing, or even sleeping because something just feels off, but you can't quite put your finger on it. This could mean you need a bite adjustment.

If you're experiencing any of these issues, give your dentist a call. An occlusal adjustment might be necessary to fix your bite and alleviate your discomfort.

And if this step was skipped and you want a second opinion, I’m happy to take a second glance. An occlusal adjustment might help solve your discomfort and improve your bite. Plus, in most cases, this is covered by insurance!

In my office, the new patient goodie bag has something that everyone loves - a tongue scraper - you're not leaving with a cheap toothbrush qualified to clean little more than grout.

PSA: If you're not tongue scraping, you're missing out on an essential part of oral hygiene.

Our tongues and mouths serve as one of our most effective detoxification pathways. While we sleep, our bodies expel unwanted bacteria through our tongues. If we don't scrape off that bacteria, we end up re-ingesting it when we eat or drink anything. It’s an unpleasant thought, but important to consider.

Once you start tongue scraping, you'll realize its benefits and won't want to stop. Brushing your tongue when you brush your teeth doesn’t have the same effect; it merely pushes the bacteria around, loosening them in your mouth. Instead, make sure to scrape it off thoroughly.

Did you know there's a great strategy for avoiding cavities that works for both kids and adults? Many parents use sealants to protect their kids' teeth, but often stop when they get older.

For kids, sealants help protect the chewing surfaces of teeth from decay and last for a few years.

For teenagers and adults, I use a more advanced technique called Preventive Resin Restorations (PRR). This method applies a thin resin coating to the chewing surfaces of molars, premolars, and any deep grooves (known as pits and fissures). Over 75% of dental decay begins in these hard-to-clean grooves, making them highly susceptible to decay. PRRs seal these deep grooves, creating a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that protects the tooth.

In many cases, I can get these covered by insurance with zero out-of-pocket expenses (though your insurance deductible may apply).
