A question we get a lot: "What is the BEST way to prevent tooth decay?"

The best way to prevent tooth decay is boring but effective:

Brush twice a day
Floss daily
Use fluoride toothpaste
Limit frequent sugar exposure
Keep up with dental cleanings

Cavities do not usually happen overnight. They build slowly, which means prevention works best when it is consistent.

Have you ever been told you need a crown? (and you said, "Obviously, because I'm AMAZING" of course) 😂

Think of a crown as a "helmet" for your tooth. A crown is essentially a custom-made cap that fits snugly over the entire visible portion of a tooth. Once it's bonded in place, it looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth (and we promise nobody will know the difference).

Your dentist might recommend a crown for a few different reasons:

- Severe decay: When a cavity is too large for a regular filling, a crown steps in to protect what's left of the tooth structure.

- A cracked or weakened tooth: Cracks can worsen over time. A crown holds everything together and prevents further damage.

- After a root canal: Root canals leave teeth more brittle, so a crown reinforces and protects the treated tooth.

- Cosmetic concerns: Deeply discolored or misshapen teeth can get a complete makeover with a crown.

- Dental implants and bridges: Crowns are also used to complete implants or anchor a bridge in place.

If you need some dental work (that might include a crown), give us a call at LifeSmile Dental Group and let us help you show your best smile! 503-644-5433

Don't let cavities bring you down! Let's talk about the reality of how we fix them at LifeSmile Dental Group!

Most people don’t think about cavities until something starts to feel off. A little sensitivity, a twinge when you bite down, or your dentist casually says, “Hey, we caught something early.” That’s actually the best-case scenario. When a cavity is caught early, fixing it is usually simple, c...

The bacteria in plaque produce acids that erode tooth enamel, eventually creating a hole, or cavity, in the tooth surface. Left untreated, this decay can spread to the interior of the tooth, and might lead to the need for a crown, a root canal, or even extraction. When caught early, your dentist can treat your cavity conservatively by restoring your tooth’s function and appearance with a filling.

Cavities happen, but catching them early makes all the difference.

When we find decay early, it’s usually a simple fix. Most cavities can be treated in just one visit with a tooth-colored filling that restores both the look and function of your tooth.

The goal is always the same: fix the problem early, keep your tooth strong, and keep treatment as simple as possible.

It’s been a stressful time for a lot of people. When stress and anxiety increase, the body often responds in subtle ways — tight shoulders, shallow breathing, trouble sleeping.

Another very common stress response is jaw clenching or teeth grinding, also called bruxism.

Many people don’t even realize they’re doing it. The jaw muscles are incredibly strong, and they can stay tense for long periods without us noticing until symptoms start to appear.

If you’ve been waking up with jaw soreness, headaches, or tooth sensitivity lately, it might be worth paying attention to what your jaw is doing during the day and at night.
