There are so many dental emergencies that can be fixed in a single appointment at my Port Orange dental office.

A lot of patients worry that they’ll have to get a referral to a specialist, come back for multiple appointments, and spend time waiting and worrying. The good news is that quite often, we can get everything taken care of the very same day you call.

We can take teeth out and rebuild the bone in the same visit, so the site is ready for an implant later on. We do crowns right here in the office. If your gums are painful and inflamed in one specific area, we can often clean that area out and get the healing started the same day.

You don't need to know what's wrong before you call. Just call us so that we can take care of you.

Technology is always changing, and that's one big reason continuing education matters to me.

New companies, new types of technology, different tools that make

I've prepped so many crowns and placed so many composite restorations, but you can take a CE course, pick up one little tip you hadn't thought of, and even after all these years of experience, that's worth it right there.

There's always something more to learn, and our patients benefit from it.

Losing your sense of taste can end up costing you teeth.

It sounds like a stretch until you follow it through. Taste diminishes as you get older. Food gets bland, so you reach for more sugar to get some flavor back, and often for processed food, because cooking properly for one person takes energy you'd rather spend elsewhere.

More sugar and more processed carbohydrates means more decay.

Two other changes stack on top of that. Your body has more inflammation to handle as you age and heals gum inflammation more slowly, so gum problems spread faster than they would have years ago.

And if brushing has gotten harder, there's more plaque sitting there while that happens.

None of it is inevitable. It does mean the watching needs to be closer than it used to be.

A lot of new patients come in having gone three, four years or more without a dental exam. That's unfortunate, because your teeth really do need to be cleaned and checked.

An exam looks at far more than cavities and gum disease. We're also checking for oral cancer, teeth grinding, wear on your jaw joints, and other issues you can't see or feel on your own.

Regular exams and cleanings are one of the simplest ways to catch things early.

How can I have cavities when nothing hurts?

The answer is better news than it sounds. Decay doesn't hurt until it's deep, so if we've found one and you feel nothing, we found it early enough to fix it and move on.

By the time a cavity hurts, it has usually reached the nerve, and now you're looking at a root canal instead of a filling. That cavity was there for months or longer. It would have shown up on a routine exam.

Cold sensitivity is a different signal, and it doesn't automatically mean decay. Worth mentioning to us, not worth losing sleep over.

If it's been a while since anyone looked, that's the appointment to make.

Overdue for an exam? Message us and we'll find a time for you.

When an implant part goes missing, sometimes the trash bag gets questioned first.

One of our dental assistants, mid-search, holding up the trash bag like it might just confess. It didn't. The part turned up somewhere else entirely.

Just another day of the small mysteries that keep things interesting around here.

The choice between a dental implant, a bridge and a denture is really a question about the teeth you still have.

An implant sits on its own, and it can't get a cavity. A crown or a bridge can. It's not uncommon to find decay around a crown that's been in place for many years. Your gums still need looking after either way.

A bridge means reshaping the healthy teeth on both sides to carry it. Over the years you lose bone in the gap underneath, and that brings gum recession around those crowns and more replacement work later on.

A removable denture gives you roughly a quarter of your chewing strength, in our experience. The force keeps landing on your natural teeth instead of spreading out.

An implant spreads the forces out, which protects the rest of your mouth.

There are situations where a bridge is the better answer, usually when the neighboring teeth are already compromised.

Weighing your options for a missing tooth? Message us and we'll talk it through.

Should I call the dentist if my filling just fell out?

YES.

This is literally why you have a dentist. So you have an expert to ask when you're concerned. A lost filling can look alarming and turn out to be minor. It can also look minor and turn out to be a pretty big deal, and there's no way to tell those two apart from your bathroom mirror.

What matters is what's underneath. Sometimes the tooth just needs a new filling. Sometimes what's left is a thin wall of tooth that needs a crown over it before it breaks. And if the nerve is exposed, waiting turns a small appointment into a much longer one.

So call about the small stuff. If it can wait, we'll tell you it can wait, and you'll have peace of mind either way.

Not sure whether it's urgent? That's exactly when to call.

I like that I get to make the decisions that are best for us as a practice.

We have a small, stable team here, not a rotating group of staff. Everybody has a specific role, trained by me and by each other, so the whole office flows the way it should.

Decisions don't come from some corporate person who's never walked through the door. They come from everybody's input. We make the choices together.

Come see what that kind of decision-making feels like.

When the assistant is a LITTLE too sensitive.

One tiny comment, one unexpected sound, and suddenly we're all consoling her. Ten out of ten drama, ten out of ten heart. We wouldn't trade her for anyone.

Come meet the team, tears and all.
