To reach the infected pulp we have to open the roof of the tooth, which leaves the walls thin and unsupported. A crown wraps it and ties the cusps back together.

Here's the part people miss: that tooth has no nerve anymore, so it will not warn you before it cracks. Feeling fine is not the same as being strong.

Research has found uncrowned root canal treated back teeth are lost at several times the rate of crowned ones, and that timing matters.

This week's myth: "My unused benefits roll over to next year." For most dental plans they don't. The annual maximum resets on January 1 and the unused portion disappears, even though you paid premiums all year.

If you've been putting off a filling, a crown or your second cleaning, finishing it in 2026 may cost less out of pocket than starting fresh in January.

• KöR whitening: about two weeks of at-home trays plus an in-office visit.
• Bonding for chips or small gaps: usually a single visit.
• Porcelain veneers: two visits with lab time between them, so start this month.
