Down here near the beach, half the people I meet are only here part of the year. Snowbirds, seasonal folks, someone on vacation who woke up with a toothache.

That makes me a different kind of dentist for a lot of people. Not the one they've had for thirty years, but the one they need right now, while they're here. And I'm glad to be that.

A practice is only as good as the people in the rooms with you, and I got lucky with mine.

Tina runs our front office and has been with me for seven years. Kristi is our hygienist and has been here longer than I've owned the place, gentle-handed, and patients genuinely love her. Omar, who I’ve known for years, just joined us and the way he talks to people just puts them at ease.

Several of us speak Spanish, which matters in a community like ours where so many families do too.

Almost nobody plans to need a full rebuild of their mouth. It sneaks up on them, one small decision at a time.

It usually starts with a single tooth. It gets pulled and not replaced, because at the time it didn't seem to matter. Then the teeth around it shift into space. The bite changes. More teeth get stressed and start to go. A few years later the whole thing has collapsed inward and there's not much left to work with.

The other common path is simply avoiding the dentist for a long stretch. Decay and gum disease are quiet. They don't hurt until they're advanced, and by then small problems have become big ones.

I'm not saying this to make anyone feel bad about the past. I'm saying it because people genuinely underestimate the risk of letting even one tooth go.

Whenever patients come in, they get a full set of X-rays, and we show them, not just talk about them.

Then we take intraoral images so they can see exactly what their broken tooth looks like, up close, on the big screen. Once they see it, they understand what's going on.

I want patients to understand every step, not just be told about it. A lot of doctors skip the intraoral imaging step entirely, we don't.

You know the ads. "$99 implants." "Dentures for $X a month." They grab your attention, and then the real number shows up once you're in the door.

We won't do that to you. We find that kind of marketing turns a dentist into a bait-and-switch artist, and trust is the whole job. You can't earn it by tricking someone into the chair.

So here's how it works here. Before we begin any treatment, you get a written plan with the cost on it. You sign off on it. There are no surprise charges waiting at the end, no codes slipped in to pad the bill.

If we hit something unexpected, which is rare, we stop and talk about it before we do anything. You're never going to get a bill you didn't agree to.

There's a specific kind of relief on someone's face when a pain they've been living with finally stops.

I see it with emergencies all the time. Somebody comes in worn down, sometimes after putting it off for weeks, months, or even sometimes years. They’ve been hoping it would settle on its own. A wisdom tooth that's been a problem forever. A badly broken tooth that's finally too much. They're not just in pain, they're tired of the pain.

Getting them out of it is the best part of my day. Not the most complicated work I do, but maybe the most appreciated. Once the pain is gone and they can think straight, then we talk about what's next, calmly, on their terms.

When you're in pain, it's hard to think about anything else. Taking that away gives people their day back.

Emergency of the day: front tooth number nine, broken off at the gum line, tooth still inside the crown.

We removed the root, placed an immediate implant, and converted the crown into a provisional to keep the tissue looking natural. No flipper, no walking around without a front tooth.
