An article that came out recently about "This common tomato nutrient may help prevent severe gum disease" caught our eye, and we read it. The part the article does get right is this: in a U.S. study of adults ages 65 to 79, lower lycopene intake was linked with more severe periodontitis. Good signal. Not proof. What actually happened is the researchers found an association, not that tomatoes cured gum disease or that lycopene alone prevents it. The headline skips the catch that this was cross-sectional data, so timeline and cause are still unsettled. For you today, eating well helps, but it does not replace periodontal maintenance, gum treatment, or a real exam if your gums are bleeding.
